Job Description
Looking to begin a career in ecology?
FPCR are hiring Seasonal Assistant Ecologists to help with the upcoming survey season. We welcome applicants willing and able to travel to our office at Lockington (J24 of the M1).
We offer both zero hours and fixed-term contracts for those seeking a rewarding new career. Limited opportunities for permanent roles may also be available at the end of the season.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical survey and mitigation skills for various species and habitats. Our friendly, busy office provides experience in technical report writing and data presentation. While we offer a mix of office-based and remote work, new assistants will initially be required to attend the office full-time for training and guidance from colleagues.
The Assistant Ecologist role involves a combination of fieldwork and office-based consultancy support, with opportunities in project management, report preparation, and data processing.
What is the job role?
You will often be out in the field conducting protected species surveys and habitat creation works. Full training will be provided, including training towards protected species licences. There will also be opportunities to gain valuable office experience, including survey planning and QGIS work.
Please note that the work requires outside-of-normal-office hours, including evening surveys for species like bats and early morning bird surveys. Travel throughout the East Midlands and occasionally further afield, including overnight stays, will be required.
What do we need from you?
* Well-organised, enthusiastic, and motivated individuals
* A keen interest in ecology and conservation
* The ability to record field data reliably and accurately
* Good communication skills and team effectiveness
* Familiarity with UK wildlife legislation and a basic understanding of the planning system and policies
* A full driving licence, access to a vehicle, and willingness to add Business Use to insurance
* Currently studying or holding a qualification in an environmental subject; proficiency with software like QGIS is a plus
* Experience in UK habitat and protected species surveys is advantageous
* A good understanding of British species, wildlife legislation, and planning policies related to ecology
