Applications are invited for a substantive post for the position of Consultant Geriatrician with a specialist interest in Stroke.
The Elderly Medicine department has expanded rapidly over the past seven years and this additional post will bring the number of Geriatricians within the department to fourteen.
Such rapid growth has offered many opportunities for service development in Elderly Medicine providing a comprehensive portfolio of specialist elderly care services. The team has an inclusive and flexible approach to developing services and supporting one another. Interested applicants should be keen to replicate this further.
The post offers exciting opportunities for a successful candidate who wishes to influence the rapid developments occurring within this energetic and dynamic department. This post will have a specialist interest in Stroke and support Acute Frailty services either directly or through other subspecialty support.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS FT is an RCP Future Hospital exemplar site and continues to transform its urgent care pathways, by working closely with our community health and social care providers, as well as Western Cheshire CCG to deliver an integrated model that increases the utilisation of ambulatory and short stay care whilst supporting enhanced care delivery within the community. The Trust has a strong Medical Education department and the post holder would have a significant educational role.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be expected to have a specialist interest of stroke and Acute Geriatrics. The post is to support an already successful Acute Geriatrics Team based within The Countess of Chester. The job plan rotates through General Geriatrics cover and Stroke Medicine cover as outlined in the indicative job plan. Please refer to the job description for further details of the job role.
About us
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
1. The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
2. Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
3. Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
