Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit to a full time PEM trained Consultant within Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. This Job plan will consist of 10PAs (8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA). Alder Hey is one of the busiest Paediatric Emergency Departments (ED) in the country, providing 24 hour facilities for the care of the acutely ill and injured children of Liverpool, and surrounding districts. In April 2012, Alder Hey became one of two Major Trauma Centres for children in the North-West.
Main duties of the job
Clinical
1. The resuscitation, examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of ED patients.
2. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
3. To make appropriate referral to inpatient teams for admission when necessary.
4. Responsibility for patients in the ED / EDU until the patient is referred to specialty teams or admitted to an inpatient ward or returned to the care of their general practitioner.
5. Strive to meet departmental clinical quality indicators and targets.
Other
1. Liaison with senior colleagues to ensure the provision of effective ED clinical services.
2. Responsibility in respect of the reasonable and effective use of hospital and district resources in liaison with ED budget holder.
3. Liaison through the directorate with other staff of the hospital and the health authority.
4. Participation in the Major Incident Procedure.
5. Assistance and liaison with emergency responders, including local and regional ambulance services.
6. Assistance and liaison with professionals dealing with children in external healthcare settings such as walk-in centres.
7. Teaching and training of undergraduate medical and nursing students; postgraduate doctors and nurses; nurse practitioners; other health professionals on placement in the department.
8. Contribution to Clinical Governance activities in the Department.
9. Participation in improvement initiatives in the Department e.g., implementation of National Guidance.
Teaching & Academic role
1. Participate in the teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates.
2. Develop research interests in their area of interest and expertise.
Managerial responsibilities
1. Participate in departmental meetings related to strategic planning.
2. Take an active role in service review and development.
CPD, Audit & Clinical Governance
1. Participate in CPD activity for which financial support is available.
2. Initiate and undertake appropriate audits as required within the department.
3. Take part in the clinical governance programme.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration.
* On specialist register (or eligible for same) for Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine or eligible for CCT within 6 months at time of interview.
* MRCPCH, FRCEM or equivalent.
* CCT or CESR (or equivalent demonstrable training) in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
Experience and knowledge
* Current APLS or EPLS certification.
* Current ETC or ATLS certification.
* Child Protection Training Level 3.
* APLS / EPLS ATLS / ETC Instructor status.
* Current NLS certification.
* Previous experience of trauma service.
Skills and abilities
* Teaching skills and experience.
* Ability to supervise the clinical work of doctors in training and other staff.
* Ability to lead resuscitation in both illness and trauma.
* Oral and written communication skills in English.
* Ability to organise and prioritise personal workload and that of others.
* Ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organisation.
* Ability to relate to patients and carers from a wide range of backgrounds and to empathise with their needs and concerns.
