An opportunity has arisen within the Chichester and Worthing Clinical Coding Team for a Band 5 senior Clinical Coder. The candidate should hold Accredited Clinical Coder Status having passed both papers of the National Clinical Coding Qualification or equivalent coding experience of ten years or greater. The vacancy is also open to Trained Coders or candidates with the required essential criteria who wish to train to be Clinical Coders starting in a Band 3 Trainee Clinical Coder role. Senior Clinical Coders should have proven coding accuracy to DSPT expectations met level at audit and proven productivity of at least thirty five Admitted Patient Care inpatient episodes per day. They must have the confidence to mentor trainee and less experienced coders. They must have a thorough knowledge of HRG and tariffs in order to undertake low income episode reviews.
They must uphold the departmental aim of achieving excellence through accuracy and be a role model to trainees and less experienced coders.
Main duties of the job
1. To extract (primarily from clinical records) and record, complete, consistent and accurate information of patients' diagnosis and treatment according to recognised coding methods and to meet agreed time scales, which support the Trust Business Plan, effective patient care and the SUS PbR Process.
2. To support clinical coders within the Department, assist with clinical coding audits and the supervision and mentoring of trainee clinical coders.
3. To provide advice to trainee and less experienced trained coders on complex procedures.
4. To provide an accurate, timely and consistent abstraction and coding of all relevant clinical information, relating to the diagnoses and operations for patients admitted to Trust according to the coding conventions and standards of ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) and OPCS4 (Classification of Surgical Operations and Procedures).
5. To undertake monthly specialty, low income and quality assurance reviews.
This data is essential for the effective management of Trusts and directly influences income in line with Payment by Results process. It also forms the basis for clinical audit, clinical governance reporting, bench marking and medical research.
Senior Clinical Coders required to attend specialist workshops and regular refresher training courses.
This role requires a great attention to clinical detail and a logical thought process.
