Position: Head of Discipline - Systems Engineering (Hybrid)
Flight Avionics (FLX) are at the forefront of Global Avionics Solutions, and they have a fantastic opportunity to join as a Head of Discipline - Systems Engineering based in our Crawley office.
The scope of Engineering activities covers end-to-end Communications systems that include airborne and ground aspects, military tactical and mission management systems, and military communication systems.
The Head of Discipline Systems Engineering provides technical leadership to incorporate best practices on systems engineering, product certification, safety, configuration, and engineering governance.
This is a key role in overseeing, defining, and executing with key stakeholders the domain systems capability strategy, ensuring the overall adequacy of System Engineering capability for allocation on projects, bids, and research and development to match operational delivery requirements, validating coherence with discipline/cost centre financial budgeting defined.
Reporting into the Head of Engineering, in addition, the role has a matrix reporting line to the UK Systems Discipline & Capability Director.
You will have a strong focus on delivering customer excellence while managing the Systems Engineering Discipline and supporting their growth in terms of skills, competencies, and career progression.
Other key Responsibilities:
* Perform technical reviews associated within the Systems Engineering discipline on projects, bids, and research and development.
* Endorse and authorize System Engineering discipline Engineering Plans and cost and time estimates for new bids and contract variations.
* Ensure continuous improvement based on root cause analysis, problem solving, capitalization, and new practice deployment.
* Ensure the capitalization and sharing of knowledge and assets (building blocks, cost estimating models, best practices).
* Empower the full integration of the Certification team with the engineering teams and promote collaborative working.
* Support the data management activities including data retention, archival, and ITAR compliance.
We are looking for a Systems Engineering Lead who has:
* Previous experience in a technical and managerial leadership role within an engineering environment.
* Excellent people management skills and the ability to communicate confidently at all levels of the organization and influence and challenge others.
* A team player who can interface at all levels, represent the company to outside government and customer organisations, and operate successfully in a multi-cultural environment with the ability to work in a multi-disciplined, international team environment.
* The ability to approach the role with both a strategic and operational approach. A good problem solver showing initiative and improvisation.
* Experience working in a complex Engineering environment with strong governance experience.
* Experience coaching and mentoring senior employees.
* Comprehensive understanding of discipline Engineering Standards, processes, and maturity models.
* The ability to question/challenge established processes and offer innovative alternatives. Drive for focus on continual improvement.
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held; however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
