This is an exciting opportunity to become a Batch Operations Application Operations Engineer working on the NPS (National PAYE System) Service as part of HMRCs Critical National Infrastructure. The NPS Batch Execution team is part of the wider Enterprise Live Services (ELS) function. This, in turn, sits within HMRCs CDIO Service Operations Observability business area. Successful applicants will, through in-house training, become a vital cog in the success of the NPS Batch Execution team in Newcastle which is, fundamentally, accountable for the successful end-to-end operational running of a diverse array of daily NPS System batch processes. As part of ELS, the main functions of the NPS (National PAYE System) Batch and Event Team are the scheduling, processing, monitoring and recording of actions on the NPS System and the support of the on-line NPS service sitting on the National Insurance Recording System (NIRS). NIRS is the computer system for DWP and HMRC which contains all the information needed in the administration of National Insurance, Pay as You Earn (PAYE), benefits and pensions. Job description Through an initial and immediate in-house training program, you will learn and understand the broad infrastructure of the NPS service, its relationships with other systems and how your Batch Application Operations Engineer role supports this. You will work towards being proficient in the day-to-day NPS Batch operational support activities including batch monitoring, scheduling and execution of all batch jobs. You will act as first and second line support for problem resolution and escalations, ensuring that all problems are resolved within the requirements of the appropriate service levels. You will collaborate with and, with experience, act as a mentor to new and existing team colleagues to improve their learning and understanding of NPS and its individual batch elements. You will liaise with our main Service Delivery Partners (Accenture) and wider HMRC CDIO managerial and support teams such as the NPS Service Owners, the Customer Experience and Bridge Operations and more. You will, with guidance, build knowledge and experience over an extended timeframe and be able to demonstrate the skill sets and behaviours required to fulfil the role and duties of an NPS Shift Leader. This is at least 20% and up to a maximum 26.11% monthly payment on top of your basic salary. Note: Bank Holidays are normal working days, but you will get a 7.4-hour credit for each Bank Holiday in the working year. Usually 8 Bank holidays, so a total of 59.2 hours. Essential Criteria: Understanding of or be able to assimilate quickly (with training) basic NPS System support. Understanding the importance of and have the confidence to escalate issues to the NPS Shift Leader and to the wider CDIO and 3rd Party Supplier community. Ability and drive to identify, suggest and support service improvements as part of a Continual Improvement Environment approach. Desirable Criteria: A working knowledge of some or all of the following software packages: Microsoft Office 365, Outlook, Service Central (ServiceNow), Sharepoint, Unix, Linux, Azure and Tivoli Work Scheduler (TWS). All these skills can be acquired through HMRC-wider and in-house specific training. Interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently, often in a high-pressure environment, with commensurate training.
