The successful candidate will be a 'hands-on' technically astute mechanical engineer who thrives in a high tempo technical environment, solving difficult problems and providing solutions directly to, the soldier on the ground, as well as planning, preparing, and undertaking experimentation and field trials in direct support of specialist military users directly involved in global operations. The job is advertised as 37 hours per week. We must be innovative, able to modify and implement the latest technology and engineering practices to complex and challenging problems. In a high performing and technically talented team, we need an experienced engineer who will solve tactical, operational and at times strategic level problems in the Mechanical engineering area. You will be fully conversant with the design and engineering additive engineering processes, including use of alternative materials, policy, governance, and quality management systems requirements. You will be fully conversant with engineering schematics and interpreting technical documentation. You will be expected to conduct trials and evaluations to deliver solutions. You will deal directly with operational military users of all ranks. You will handle national sensitive information; you will use this detail in conjunction with your personable people skills, natural sense of integrity and your technical expertise to reach conclusions and solutions. Person specification In the scientific and engineering team, you will be leading with delivering design, development, and delivery of complex engineering solutions for the specialist military user. This will involve providing technical advice and undertaking development and testing of a range of engineering solutions based on the users requirements. These solutions may be ground up innovative designs, or adaptions of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) products for specific operational taskings. You will be required to lead with trials, experimentation and project management within the team providing timely and accurate feedback to the specialist user. You will work well under pressure and be required to deliver solutions in short delivery timelines. You will need to demonstrate your specialist skills in applied technologies and general engineering whilst being self-motivated to seek and develop opportunities on your own initiative and within a specialist engineering team. Using your experience and practical knowledge of engineering, material science and composites, you will produce technical reports and documentation describing project work undertaken. Drawing on your communication skills, you will need to be confident at presenting your work in person and have an ability to tailor your presentation to technical and non-technical customers. Qualifications You will have an OfQual level 6 qualification in a relevant Mechanical Engineering discipline (e.g., BEng/Bsc) with relevant experience of Mechanical Engineering. Alternatively, BTEC/ SCOTVEC HNC or HND with 3 years relevant work-related mechanical engineering experience.
