Instrumentation Engineer - Defence Systems
An Instrumentation Engineer is required to join an International Defence Systems company that designs, manufactures, and supports world-leading military systems. The successful Instrumentation Engineer will work closely with the engineering Subject Matter Experts and the Trials Team to undertake trials planning, focusing on defining and documenting instrumentation requirements.
The Instrumentation Engineer will ensure the selected instruments meet all trials needs through a combination of interrogating product data sheets and bench testing equipment. This role is based from the West Midlands site, although the candidate should expect significant amounts of travel to various locations around the UK and abroad.
Responsibilities:
1. Work closely with the Instrumentation Lead, Trials Managers, and Subject Matter Experts.
2. Ensure instrumentation is correctly specified and capable of functioning as required.
3. Contribute and write instrumentation plans for trials, including Trials Readiness Reviews.
4. Ensure instrumentation meets accuracy, resolution, and calibration requirements.
5. Work at a range of test sites to ensure instrumentation and data acquisition needs are met.
6. Manage test equipment on trial sites in line with relevant Security, Data, and Asset Plans.
7. Ensure all instrumentation is available, maintained, and calibrated for the duration of the trials.
8. Ensure provision of spares stock at trial locations, arranged through Instrumentation Lead.
9. Ensure measurement equipment is installed correctly as per trials instrumentation plans.
10. Ensure equipment is mechanically secure and electrically safe.
11. Gather accurate and repeatable data for the trials as per the Test Plan.
12. Manage the production and storage of data in line with Data Management and Security Plans.
13. Contribute towards Daily Trials Reports from an instrumentation perspective.
14. Contribute experience towards the purchase of new test equipment through the trials process.
15. Ensure compliance with all applicable military standards and Subject Matter Expert requirements.
Qualifications, Skills, or Experience:
1. Must hold a Full UK Drivers Licence and be qualified in a relevant engineering discipline.
2. Experience in verification and validation activities, preferably on mobile machinery.
3. Experience with instrumentation for firing, sighting, and mobility trials is desirable.
4. Experience with the specification, installation, and operation of data acquisition equipment.
5. Knowledge of 24V systems, safe electrical working practices, and fault finding are essential.
6. Working knowledge of CAN bus, Ethernet, electrical power, and communication technologies.
7. Working knowledge and experience of utilizing various sensors such as accelerometers.
8. Working knowledge of strain gauges, temperature sensors, and current clamps is desirable.
9. Familiarity with hardware and software such as Dewesoft, IMC, Racelogic VBox.
10. Familiarity with MOD sites and policies, including Range Standing Orders, is an advantage.
11. Strong technical report writing, verbal, and IT communication skills.
12. A strong work ethic and good team working skills are required.
13. Willingness to travel extensively within the UK and abroad.
14. Security Clearance (SC) will be required due to the nature of the Defence products involved.
