Job introduction Working within BBC Technology & Media Operations the Technology Operations Wales team provide technical support to all teams that operate within Wales. We have staff based in Bangor and Roath Lock, although the majority are based in the BBC Cymru Wales, purpose-built broadcast headquarters in Central Square, Cardiff. This Team Lead, Operations Engineering (TLOE) position will lead the small team operating from our offices in Bangor, who provide support to all teams working across mid and north Wales. The team exists to provide excellent customer support and services. As the TLOE based in Bangor you will be responsible for the development, performance, and delivery of the services provided by the team of engineers ensuring the service levels are appropriate and the teams in Bangor can deliver the highest quality of output; stakeholder engagement is paramount in this role. Whilst the ability to speak Welsh is not mandatory for this role it would be desirable. Appointments will always be made on merit. Interview process There will be a short technical assessment ahead of the interview, the assessment will take 30 minutes. This will be followed by a 45-minute interview. Ideally both the assessment and interview will take place in Bangor but a virtual session is also available. Main responsibilities As the most senior technology manager in Bangor you will provide the leadership of the team, which comprises of a senior operations engineer, two full-time and one part-time operations engineer. The team support those working in the Bangor office seven days per week and also support other sites in north and mid-Wales. You will plan routine maintenance of the technology, identify improvements and then implement changes in a safe and controlled manner. The role is also the main escalation point for incidents and business continuity, working with the technology operations management team. Bangor has a range of broadcast (primarily Radio) and IT technology which you will take responsibility for, ensuring projects in your area are properly resourced. You will also be a comfortable in articulating accurate information to technical and non-technical staff. This includes composing communications to large, diverse audiences and acting as the point of contact for operational management. Are you the right candidate The successful candidate will have experience of leading a team which provides excellent customer service and be an advocate of enabling staff reach their full potential. They will be able to build trust and develop strong relationships as well as make complex technical decisions under pressure. Excellent organisational and staff management skills are essential as is the desire to provide the highest quality of service from yourself and lead the team in line with good operational protocols. They will have a broad technical knowledge, including a high-level understanding of varied and complex broadcast systems built on different platforms from many separate components. They will be comfortable troubleshooting and diagnosing defects in these systems and have an ability to assess the impact of any issues. They will have good experience of implementing appropriate contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events. They will also provide excellent stakeholder management during such events and be confident managing Incidents to their conclusion or to escalate as appropriate. They will often act as the final on-site authority by using experience or knowledge to inform team decisions and lead on business continuity. The ideal candidate will be confident, articulate, able to explain complex issues to non-technical staff and capable of identifying innovative solutions in stressful circumstances. Five key mandatory areas: • Excellent knowledge of broadcast systems, particularly Radio • Experience of managing a team of broadcast engineers • Experience in logging and managing incidents in an operational environment, the typical challenges and good practice. • Evidence of key skills in communicating effectively with stakeholders at all levels. • Experience of the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Working Time Directive and other workplace legislation; also on the production of risk assessments.
