Position Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and experienced assistant farm manager to oversee the daily operations of our organic farm. This is the opportunity to join a farm that is poised for growth and major expansion next to a major urban center. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sustainable agriculture, a passion for organic farming practices, and a commitment to producing high-quality, certified organic crops. As the assistant farm manager, you will be responsible for following crop planning, managing seeding and transplanting, labor supervision, inventory management, and maintaining organic certification standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Farm Operations: Oversee the planning, planting, cultivation, irrigation, and harvesting of crops according to organic farming standards. Manage crop rotations, soil health, and pest control through sustainable methods.
2. Staff Management: Train and supervise farm staff, seasonal workers, and volunteers. Provide leadership and guidance to ensure efficient and productive operations.
3. Organic Certification Compliance: Maintain organic certification by ensuring that all farm activities comply with organic farming regulations. Keep detailed records of crop production, inputs used, and certifications.
4. Equipment & Resource Management: Oversee the maintenance and repair of farm equipment and facilities. Ensure efficient use of resources, including water, fertilizers, and labor, to optimize crop yield while minimizing environmental impact.
5. Budget & Financial Oversight: Assist in following and managing the farm’s annual labor and supply budget. Track and report expenses, ensure cost-effective operations, and seek opportunities for financial sustainability and profitability.
6. Sustainability & Innovation: Stay informed on the latest trends and innovations in organic farming practices. Implement new technologies and practices to improve farm productivity, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability.
7. Sale Support: Work closely with the retail team to get products for markets, CSA programs, and wholesale customers. Assist in planning crop selection based on demand.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, agronomy, or related field (or equivalent experience). Preferred but not required.
2. 3-5 years of experience managing an organic farm or large-scale agricultural operation.
3. In-depth knowledge of organic farming practices, pest management, soil health, crop rotation, and irrigation systems.
4. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
5. Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment.
6. Experience with budgeting, resource management, and financial planning.
7. Knowledge of organic certification standards and processes.
8. Familiarity with sustainable farming techniques and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
9. Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with direct-to-consumer sales (e.g., farmers markets, CSA programs).
2. Certification in organic farming or permaculture design.
Working Conditions:
The role requires physical labor, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Weekend and holiday work may be required, especially during planting and harvest seasons.
Live Work:
There is potential for housing provided onsite via a rented trailer or if you have a travel trailer.
