Job Introduction
We’re recruiting two senior presenters to co-host The Global Story podcast. The daily pod is being relaunched this spring with a new editorial vision and a greater emphasis on narrative storytelling. The BBC is investing in The Global Story to become the equivalent of the “front page” of the BBC in North America. The show will provide a deep dive on one big international story every day, giving the audience a deeper understanding of the context and stories that lie behind major global events. In a moment of increasing turmoil worldwide, this show will keep listeners up to date on how the key issues of our time are playing out on the global stage.
As one of two hosts you will together be the personality of the podcast and a key editorial driving force. You’ll work closely with the production team to select stories and tell them in the most compelling way possible.
This role will be from Monday-Friday in the office at BBC New Broadcasting House, with the flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as the news agenda requires.
Main Responsibilities
* To co-host the relaunched daily (mon-fri) deep dive news podcast for WS and BBC Studios.
* Scripting and structuring the daily podcast.
* Planning and conducting in-depth interviews which get the best out of the contributors.
* Play a leading role – alongside editors and producers – in choosing the best stories for the podcast, developing the focus of each episode, and shaping the narrative arc.
* Play a leading role in the planning process by suggesting ideas for stories or treatments of stories.
* Creative ability to generate and develop innovative ideas for our podcast output.
* To come up with authentic, added insights on the biggest global stories of our time.
* Helping to generate impact including digital for the podcast.
* Act as an ambassador for the podcast on and off air.
* Help to build the podcast community and grow the audience particularly in North America.
Are you the right candidate?
We are looking for presenters with the ability to connect with audiences through warmth, wit and authenticity. You’ll have experience of narrative audio storytelling having hosted a global podcast/radio programme with a global outlook or reported extensively from around the world, with exceptional writing skills and the ability to engage listeners through compelling scripting and interviews. You will have an exploratory and curious approach, with experience of doing in-depth interviews that draw out the best stories from both experts and ordinary people. You’ll be an authority on global news, with a track record of unpacking global stories and trends in an accessible and engaging way.
* Wide-ranging experience of hosting and presenting including in-depth and narrative audio/podcasts with a global outlook.
* Excellent writing/scripting and audio storytelling skills with a track record of using creative narrative devices.
* Extensive experience of doing in-depth interviews with both experts and ordinary people. You can get the best story out of anyone and conduct interviews with humanity and empathy.
* You’ll be an authoritative voice on global issues, with experience of either reporting from around the world or presenting podcasts or programmes that have a global outlook.
* You will have working knowledge of the current podcast market and audiences in the US, and experience of growing podcast audiences.
* You will be fizzing with creative ideas for stories, treatments, and interviewees. You’ll have the vision and flair to turn ideas into fantastic output.
* You will have a flexible approach to hosting, be open to feedback, and willing to work with your co-host, editors, and producers to develop a distinctive personality for the podcast.
