Job summary
To be an efficient flexible member of the laboratory and wider SWL Pathology Service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The specific aim of the Microbiology Manager is to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the service alongside a second post holder. This role is specifically to provide operational leadership for the bacteriology laboratories, with cover provided for the total Microbiology service (i.e. Virology/Molecular) when required.
Main duties of the job
1. In conjunction with the General Manager of Infection and Immunity be responsible for the organisation and continuity of a comprehensive (24 hour a day, 7-day week) diagnostic Microbiology service across SW London Pathology.
2. Undertake technical validation of highly complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.
3. Ensuring that all activities are undertaken in line with relevant policies and regulatory frameworks, and that all key performance and clinical indicators are met.
4. To be responsible for and to manage corrective action when a situation arises that leads to, or may lead to, service delivery failure.
5. Be responsible for Standard Operating Procedures being implemented, reviewed and maintained.
6. Ensure the key performance indicators for the service are met through effective operational planning of the service and allocation of resources.
7. Responsible for maintaining and improving standards to comply with UKAS ISO:15189 and to maintain the laboratory's accreditation status for Blood Sciences together with the Clinical Leads of Department and the Quality Management team.
8. To be responsible for the effective planning and management of change within the department.
9. To support on service improvement across the Division.
10. To support business development initiatives across the Division.

Job responsibilities
1. To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Bacteriology laboratory as well as ensuring smooth transport of work from all sites in the network.
2. To act as contingency for Virology/Molecular operational management.
3. To undertake highly complex; specialist tasks for bacteriology areas including but not exclusively complex work improvement analysis; cost improvement initiatives and successful implementations.
4. To be responsible for the quality-of-service delivery including UKAS accreditation and meeting key performance indicators for the Microbiology laboratories.
5. To be responsible for ensuring that all activities that are undertaken in the Microbiology laboratory are compliant with relevant policies of accrediting and regulatory frameworks.
6. To manage the Technical Leads, Quality Manager/Health and Safety Advisor for the Microbiology laboratory with the exception of medical, clinical scientist and nursing staff.
7. To be responsible for informing and implementing strategic developments within the Microbiology laboratory and to contribute to developments across SWL Pathology as appropriate as a member of the management team.
8. To manage pay and non-pay budgets.
9. To represent SWL Pathology for issues relating to their area of responsibility, which would involve liaising with representatives of the local commissioners and other external agencies.
10. To be involved in setting priorities, initiating developments, overseeing audit and training across the Microbiology division.
11. To be responsible for the formulation of strategies for the training, supervision, and development of all non-medical staff within the Microbiology laboratory and users of the service as appropriate.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential
* Post graduate Management qualification or equivalent experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) within relevant area
* MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* HCPC Registration
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists or equivalent experience
Desirable
* Recognised qualification in laboratory design and or workflow management
Knowledge and Experience

* Significant experience in the practice of Microbiology Laboratory Medicine
* Ability to carry out staff appraisals
* Experience in staff recruitment and selection
* Experience in handling complex HR issues

* Use of pathology computer systems
* Track record of a management role in Microbiology
