City Services are currently recruiting additional Grounds Operatives Outdoor Recreation for the Central District, based at Southampton Sports Centre.
The Central District is complemented by some wonderful green spaces, and have busy and high profile retail districts. We are seeking candidates who take pride and personal responsibility in their work and enjoy working with a team.
The Grounds Operative is responsible for maintaining the outdoor sports facilities at Southampton Sports Centre and citywide across the district recreational parks, carrying out the care and maintenance of turf and sports areas including marking out and preparation for sporting events and reinstatement after events. The work will include specific fine turf maintenance such as spiking, rolling, scarifying, application of fertilisers, top dressing, and pesticides. The operatives are also responsible for keeping the park areas clean and tidy and to the expected maintenance standards, working towards the outcome, "Southampton is an attractive and modern city, where people are proud to live and work".
About the role:
Key Accountabilities & Duties:
1. Working as directed by the Working Supervisor or Team Leader to undertake planned and reactive work programmes, ensuring that tasks undertaken comply with recognised performance standards.
2. Carrying out care and maintenance of sports pitches. The work will include specific fine turf maintenance such as spiking, rolling, scarifying, application of fertilisers, top dressing, and applying pesticides.
3. Care and maintenance of trees, shrubs, hedges, grass, flower beds, drainage systems, and other natural features.
4. Dealing with litter and refuse.
5. Operation of machinery such as strimmers, ride-on and pedestrian mowers, tractors and attachments, leaf blowers etc. and ensure all operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Risk Assessment and any other Health and Safety Regulations and Safe Working Procedures.
6. Carry out routine operator maintenance and safety checks on plant and equipment as required, and report any faults or dangerous occurrences to the Working Supervisor.
7. Responsibility for the security, correct usage and care of all vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment.
8. Complete written records of a routine nature, including Time Sheets, Vehicle Log Sheets etc. as required.
9. The post holder will, from time to time be expected to carry out other duties such as working within the wider Central District team that undertakes grounds maintenance across the district.
The successful candidate will hold a relevant professional qualification in grounds maintenance, e.g. Grounds Management Association (GMA) level 2 Technical Certificate in Turf Surface, or equivalent, and relevant Certificates and/or proofs of technical competence and experience to undertake the job.
Working hours:
39 hours per week (37 paid plus 2 TOIL hours accrued). You will work a regular shift pattern from Monday to Thursday, from 7.30am until 4.30pm and Friday 7.30am to 3.30pm.
This permanent full time contract falls within Grade 6 of the Southampton City Council’s pay grades. Any additional hours worked are subject to overtime rates.
