We are recruiting for a Medical Director for Research and Innovation who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
Main duties of the job
Working closely with the Research & Innovation (R&I) Department, part of Chief Medical Officer's Office, the Medical Director for R&I influences and supports overall strategic leadership for all aspects of Trust R&I activities.
In particular, the post-holder will lead on the development of clinical R&I, encouraging Trust clinicians and other staff to participate in clinical R&I projects, building upon local clinical strengths, R&I interests and priorities.
The post-holder must continue to expand and strengthen existing links with academia and Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) to grow the R&I portfolio (with emphasis on 'home grown' studies), attract more funding, with the ultimate goal of Trust becoming a University Trust.

Job responsibilities
1. Understand and engage with R&I Departments budgetary decisions.
2. Share responsibility with Head of R&I in attending key meetings.
3. Support and engage with public relation activities such as Grand Rounds, events and other workshops.
4. Engage with Academia and other stakeholders to grow R&I portfolio (with emphasis on home grown studies) and attract more funding.
5. Support the R&I Department with challenges such as breaches of governance and Root Cause Analysis.
6. Provide support with development and review of R&I Standard Operating Procedures and Policies.
7. Ensure that training pertinent to the role, including mandatory training, is up to date. Attend training to maintain skills as required.
8. Duties listed in the Job Description are not exhaustive and will be adjusted if necessary to satisfy the requirements of the service.
9. Work with Head of R&I to develop a strategic plan and oversee the successful implementation of that plan that promotes R&I within and beyond MFT.
10. Ensure delivery of Annual Operational Plan as consistent with strategy and meeting R&I quality standards.
11. Continue to develop the post of Speciality Leads for R&I, and once established engage and communicate with the post holders.
12. Engage and communicate with Senior Clinical and Executive Management staff on the R&I strategy and ensure commitment as required.
13. Chair the Research & Innovation Governance Group (RIGG) and provide regular reports to the Executive Group COEG.
14. Oversee a QA framework which will provide assurance that Clinical Trials are being managed in a safe and effective manner.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Highly developed specialist knowledge of health service, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), clinical research and clinical trials management underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
* Have a current substantive consultant contract with an NHS Trust.
* A medical degree or doctorate involving substantial research methods training.
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course.
* Higher Postgraduate degree- PhD or equivalent.
* GMC registration with full license to practice.
* Specialist Registration.
Experience Essential
* Previous experience in management, preferably in an NHS organisation, Department of Health or Research funding body.
* Proven leadership skills at a senior level, including the management, development and maintaining high standards of research quality.
* Experience of developing formal policies in a large organisation.
* Experience as a chief, principal or co-investigator.
* Experience of research capacity building activity and of supporting others.
