The Role
As a Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for designing the layout and frameworks of all projects within the business to fulfill a specific purpose, ensuring safety, economy, and functionality throughout its intended lifetime. You will investigate both the immediate loads and demands on the structure, as well as any likely future changes, ensuring a structure is designed to withstand those loads. In addition to designing new builds, you will ensure older structures remain safe and often design refurbishment schemes to guarantee long life for existing structures.
Duties include:
* Perform technical and feasibility studies, including analyzing maps, survey reports, plans, and related data to create and design engineering projects.
* Plan and investigate the properties of materials like glass, steel, and concrete, advising on the most suitable options.
* Inspect buildings and recommend options for repairs or potential demolition.
* Determine construction costs, local and professional building regulations, environmental impacts, and other factors affecting project implementation.
* Carry out extensive environmental impact assessments and identify potential risk factors affecting project delivery.
* Regularly use engineering computer software such as MATLAB and AUTOCAD to develop detailed project blueprints.
* Collaborate with professionals such as architects and engineers or clients.
* Enforce engineering, local, and legal regulations, including health and safety protocols on-site.
* Ensure projects meet legal guidelines, environmental directives, and health and safety requirements.
* Assist other departments with ad-hoc duties as required.
Key Skills
* Previous experience as a Chartered Structural Engineer or similar role
* The ability to work under pressure
* Good analytical and problem-solving skills
* Strong mathematical ability
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Great time management skills
* Previous experience in steelwork, scaffold, foundation, and temporary designs
* Previous experience in commercial developments and industrial projects
* Proficient in structural reports and external wall calculations
