DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To participate as a member of the IPU team with extensive knowledge in the care of the patients on the unit. In the absence of the IPU Senior Sister, will support the leadership and management of the Unit with emphasis on quality and clinical standards. To demonstrate high standards of individual patient care with a commitment to the development of evidence based practice. To competently care for the patient including the assessment, planning and evaluation of programs of care. Liaise and integrate with the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care and promote a team approach to working. Develop good working relationships and promote effective communication between all clinical grades of staff within the multi-disciplinary IPU team. Liaise with the IPU teams to initiate and participate in the audit and evaluation of clinical practice and surgical products in the interest of promoting quality care. Work with senior colleagues to formulate practice development strategies based on audit findings. Encourage and participate in initiatives to enhance quality care. The post holder will be proactive towards change and change management. To promote and maintain an environment conducive to professional development. Take responsibility for your own professional development. Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners, trained and untrained, including medical students and other allied medical professions. To monitor the progress of learners and in particular their skills in carrying out practical procedures. Demonstrate professional accountability. Act as a clinical role model for new staff, reflecting the philosophy, beliefs and standards of the department. Ensure that all prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with Trust policy, including the correct care and custody of controlled drugs. Offer help and advice to the patients relatives and friends responding to their individual needs in a caring supportive manner. Ensure safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies. Assist in the maintenance of good order and cleanliness of the clinical area, in conjunction with the IPU multi-disciplinary team. Have access to and maintain computerised patient records in accordance with Trust policy. Demonstrate the mandatory competencies of the Trust, attending all mandatory updates. CLINICAL GOVERNANCE, AUDIT, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Work within trust guidelines, policies and standard operating procedures. Utilise incident reporting system and participate in investigation of incidents. Assist as required in departmental audit Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others participate in the development of the same Continually monitor standards of care and participate in leading the improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research Support patient and public involvement activities in the IPU area as appropriate, leading to service improvement Ensure compliance with untoward incident reporting & near misses Promote peoples equality, diversity and rights. Assist IPU Matron in the effective use and monitoring the quality of supplies / equipment FINANCE / PHYSICAL RESOURCES Comply with best practice in the safe use of equipment by self and other members of the team, i.e. trainees / medical and nursing staff. Assist the Matron to maintain IPU budgets and assist in cost saving projects.
