We are seeking to recruit a motivated and dedicated Critical Care Staff Nurse. The working hours would be Monday-Sunday day shifts and night shifts on internal rotation.

You will be based on the ICU at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. The ICU is an 11 bedded unit, delivering the highest standards of Adult General Intensive Care. We’re a small and friendly, mighty team.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver pro-active clinical management as part of a dedicated MDT for Level 2 and Level 3 Adult General Critical Care patients.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. To ensure a high standard of care is maintained at all times through the delivery of evidence based practice.
2. To accept allocated patients and perform a comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, planning, implementing and evaluating care delivery according to the patient’s changing healthcare needs.
3. Familiarise and use technical equipment effectively and safely and to identify possible complications i.e. ventilators, haemofilters, CPAP.
4. Involve where appropriate patients and carers/relatives in the planning of the delivery of care. Provide support for both parties respecting their need for privacy and dignity.
5. Demonstrate effective communication, both written and verbal, through the maintenance of accurate records and by closely liaising with all members of the multidisciplinary team, nursing, medical and allied healthcare professionals to ensure needs are met in relation to care input and support for on-going care needs.
6. Ensure competent to carry out all nursing treatments and procedures, taking ownership for identifying and informing others when support is required.
7. Undertakes investigative sampling of patients’ blood, urine, etc. and demonstrates the ability to perform point of care testing, e.g. Blood gas analysis, blood sugars and urinalysis. Interprets results and implements appropriate care accordingly.
8. Maintains safe administration of medicines concordant with the NMC and trust policies.
9. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations relating to the patient’s condition, incorporating their clinical observations, interpretation of investigations and treatment plans.
10. Responsibility to maintain their professional accountability through the practice of safe standards reporting to the nurse in charge any untoward incidents in order to protect the patient and themselves in complying with the NMC code of professional conduct and the Trust’s local policies.
11. Commitment to self-development in preparation for the continually changing environment of critical care.
12. Maintain good relationships through effective communication by addressing people regardless of discipline in a responsible and appropriate manner.
13. To ensure effective communication and sensitivity is maintained when dealing with people regarding difficult matters and/or in difficult situations, e.g. bereavement.
14. To agree the arrangements for communication with the patient/family/carer and to document these in accordance with the trust’s policy and the patient’s right to confidentiality.
15. To enable maintenance of good record keeping and essential information regarding the patient’s condition and progress is recorded by self and team members appropriately in accordance with NMC guidelines.
16. Responsibility to keep self organisationally and departmentally updated through attendance at unit meetings and familiarising self with unit memorandum file.
17. To keep up-to-date and act consistently in maintaining current identified best practice within critical care.
18. To participate in setting and maintaining optimal standards of care on the unit.
19. To participate in audit/benchmarking within the critical area, supporting any introduction of change in practice where indicated.
Planning and Organisational Duties
1. Supports the senior staff in the provision of a Critical Care service for the Trust by participating in the management of the service to meet the demands e.g. liaising with theatre/ ward staff in the reception and discharge of patients in order to maintain throughput.
2. To effectively organise and safely transfer critically ill patients interdepartmentally and to other outside agencies utilising available equipment and completing the necessary documentation.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
1. Demonstrate empathetic interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients and carers.
2. To provide information as required, including notification of adverse events and accidents to patients, staff and visitors.
3. Continually develop and maintain the skills pertaining to computerised patient data system.
4. Responsible for the inputting of all patient information throughout their admission and discharge periods.
5. Responsible for the update of patient care plans and hand-over of current treatment plans.
6. Maintain legible and accurate records.
Responsibility for Finance
1. To ensure effective use of material resources within the unit in consultation with senior staff.
2. Assists and advises on the ordering of stores and equipment where necessary.
3. To ensure patient’s valuables and belongings are documented and managed in accordance with the trust’s policies and procedures.
Responsibility for Human Resources
1. To participate in individual performance reviews and fulfil objectives as agreed within the review period.
2. Maintain awareness and adhere to all trust policies and procedures and comply accordingly.
Responsibility for Health & Safety
Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
Responsibility for Teaching
1. Facilitate an environment conducive to learning, supportive of all staffing disciplines, registered and unregistered.
2. Undertake the role of mentor/preceptor/supervisor to other members of the unit team.
3. Contribute to the development of staff members, in identifying their training needs and supporting them in achieving their individual goals.
4. Formally assess the competence of registered staff and students providing verbal and written reports as required by the appropriate agencies.
5. Have a responsibility to maintain their own continuing professional development in accordance with NMC requirements in order to maintain within their scope of professional practice.
6. Take responsibility for utilising provided resources for developing own professional knowledge and skills regarding current developments within medical and nursing practice.
7. Participate in annual appraisal and personal development plans in identifying their own learning needs and development of strategies to achieve these.
8. Undertake annual mandatory training updates in accordance with Trust Policy.
Internal rotation is expected.
