Job responsibilities 1. Job Summary: To be responsible for carrying out specialised radiographic imaging to a high standard and in a professional manner, working to departmental guidelines whilst being accountable forown actions. To deputise for Superintendent Radiographers. The post holder will be required to carry out radiographic duties on a diverse patient population. To carry out all responsibilities with regard to relevant and appropriate Policies To communicate effectively with clinical, managerial, administrative and ancillary staff inorder to ensure a professional and timely service. The post holder will be expected to rotate between acute departments. In addition, the two new Community Diagnostic Centres currently being developed and due to be running from Early 2025. To work over a 7-day working week2. Clinical To independently undertake specialised diagnostic radiology procedures maintaining high professional standards of technical competence and always ensuring standards of essence of care. To undertake a full range of imaging procedures, to maintain knowledge and be fully aware of the safety aspects and hazards. This will include related emergency procedureswhen working in the specialised area. To be familiar with the safety guidelines for all equipment in clinical use issued by theMHRA. To be fully conversant in all aspects of Magnentic Resonance Imaging safety, including full understanding of the MRI Local Rules and emergency procedures ( e.g. Fire, Cardiac Arrest, Quench.) To monitor and evaluate Ionising Radiation Regulations 99 and IR(ME)R 2000 and ensurepatients procedures are performed with due consideration of these regulations, taking particular note of all Local Rules for specific areas of the Department. To ensure the protection and safety of all patients and staff against the dangers ofradiation. To take responsibility for the care of the patient whilst undertaking the procedure. This includes manual handling, moving the patients in the wheelchairs, beds, and trolleys. To wear heavy Pb (lead) aprons for long periods To move and handle delicate and heavy MRI Coils multiple times per shift Offer an opinion on images obtained to relevant medical personnel as per departmentalprotocols and in-house training. To supervise and provide clinical assistance to radiographers, assistant practitioners and students Abide by, promote and ensure compliance with scan protocols, procedures and guidelines Vet and prioritize cross-sectional examinations in line with clinical protocols To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with Trust and DepartmentalRisk Management policies. To undertake regular QA tests to identify and report equipment faults or inaccuracies withoutside agencies as necessary, e.g. Equipment engineers, Medical Physicists, etc. Be fully conversant of appropriate actions to take in the event of any untoward incident in the specialised areas being worked in, e.g. projectile injury in MRI, anaphylaxis postcontrast administration, pneumothorax during biopsies To report equipment failures immediately, by liaising with equipment support centres to arrange services and emergency call out for general and specialist x- ray equipment To re-arrange worklists in the event of equipment failure, organise alternative cover andinform relevant Trust staffing. To assist in the evaluation and procurement process for any new equipment within theDepartment. To cannulate patients for relevant clinical examinations within cross sectional Contact with body fluids is frequent, and constitutes highly unpleasant working conditions3. Training To participate in the induction and training of new staff, assistant practitioners, and student radiographers. To supervise, assist and support radiographers and medical staff training in specialist areas To undertake formalised assessments of staff training in the specialised areaensuring staff competency. To provide assistance and be actively involved in departmental projects and audits To be actively involved in departmental quality groups and pro-active in the sharing of goodpractice. To give lectures and presentations within the Trust and to outside organisations onareas of special interest4. Leadership/Multi-disciplinary teamwork To encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff using personalexample and constructive supervision. To be responsible for leading and co-ordinating the team in an allocated area in the absence of the Superintendent Radiographer. This will involve being able to cope with frequent interruptions from both colleagues and other medical and non-medical staff of the Trust. To motivate staff and promote a high level of morale in the department Organise rotas and workload of given small specialised areas under direction of Head of Radiography or a Superintendent Radiographer Participate in recruitment process for radiographers, assistant practitioners and supportstaff. To undertake appraisals of radiographers and assistant practitioners. To make proposals for and assist in implementation of changes in working practice asrequired for efficient service delivery.5. Communication To offer advice and guidance to patients, carers and other health professionals onradiology procedures, specialised procedures and radiation issues taking dueconsideration of the patients condition. Assess specific communication needs of individual patients. To anticipate wherecommunication difficulties might make completion of relevant difficult and implementalternative methods to ensure patient safety is maintained at all times. To inform and promote Radiology guidelines and departmental policies to other healthcareprofessionals To obtain informed consent from patients or their carers prior to undertaking procedures as appropriate to individual circumstances and barriers. To ensure accurate recording on the Radiology Information System patient information andexamination details including confirmation of examination and consumables used and dosereceived by patient. To promote good relations with other directorates and hospitals To attend any meetings as required by the Head of Radiography or SuperintendentRadiographer.6. Personal Development To attend any relevant study days and in-house lectures and training afternoons To take part in the departments personal appraisal scheme and CPD. Maintain a commitment to professional development and a high level of technical andtheoretical skills ensuring a CPD portfolio of evidence is kept up to date. To take every opportunity for self-development in extended radiographic roles To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post when requested by the Head of Radiography or Radiology Service Manager.
