Role: Trade Effluent Sampling Officer

Location: We are currently looking to recruit a Trade Effluent Sampling Officer to work within our Asset Management (Waste) department at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you? The role will cover the West Yorkshire region, operating in and around the Bradford area, therefore you must live within a reasonable commuting distance our Buttershaw site in Bradford. However, there will be an expectation an element of your time will be spent working across the Yorkshire region, for team meetings, investigations and site visits.
Working type: This is a permanent opportunity, working 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Please note flexibility is required for this role as there is some weekend and out of hours working required at times.

The Trade Effluent Sampling Officer role is an amazing opportunity for the right person to provide a positive difference to our wastewater colleagues, the public and environmental health, whilst developing personally and professionally with opportunities to progress both in team and the wider company.
The Trade Effluent Sampling Officer will join a small, diverse, and dedicated team conducting inspections and sampling of industrial waste entering the public sewer network across the Yorkshire Water catchment. The purpose of the role is to protect Yorkshire Waters wastewater assets, the environment, and people, whilst continually keeping bills contemporary for business customers. To achieve this, you’ll conduct sampling of ‘Trade Effluents’ on a variety of industrial sites throughout the region, and as necessary, within the public sewer network if working within an investigative capacity- tracing contaminants/pollutants through the network and back to source.
Where you fit in:
As our Trade Effluent Sampling Officer, you will sample and inspect these industrial discharges against pre-defined parameters and legislation, thus forming a key component of Yorkshire Waters risk management and corporate strategy, to ensure its own compliance with its regulators.
You will generate data that will be used as evidence towards enforcement action if a trader is found to be in breach of key pieces of legislate, which can result in a Formal Legal Caution and or prosecution against the offending party. As such, you will also be called upon to act as a professional witness as necessary, typically through the generation of witness statements with the support of our legal team. On occasion, this type of enforcement work can bring you into disagreement with external stakeholders, therefore excellent; interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills are a prerequisite for this role.
What skills, experience, training, and qualifications you will need:
1. A full valid driving licence is a requirement of this role (with no more than 6 points)
2. Good understanding and use of IT, particularly MS Office along with an aptitude towards company specific systems.
3. You will have excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills and be comfortable liaising with customers, operational teams, and stakeholders.
4. Ability to work on own initiative and takes ownership of their assigned caseload.
5. Good Influencing and negotiation skills.
6. Experience of Health and Safety management processes and systems.
7. Ability to operate within a corporate structure, adherence to company policies such as Health and Safety, training requirements and prescribed methods of working.
8. You will have a flexible attitude to your work as you may be required to work outside of our core hours and may also require some weekend working.
You will also benefit from having:
9. A general to good level of knowledge or awareness of environmental legislation.
10. Knowledge of the Water Industry Act 1991, in particular; sections 111 and 118.
11. A basic knowledge or interest in aqueous chemistry.
12. An environmental or chemistry professional or academic background (college/university/operational experience)
13. strong industrial experience within the water utilities industry, knowledge and understanding of wastewater assets, such as; the public sewer network, pumping stations, wastewater treatment.
14. Experience with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
