The Role
We are looking for an experienced sustainability leader to join our business as Head of Sustainability for our Infrastructure division. This is a key role in the delivery of sustainability and environmental management requirements across our infrastructure projects in the UK.
The role will also contribute to the strategic direction of Sir Robert McAlpine through involvement in the company Sustainability Leadership Group and reports to our Sustainability Director.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Sustainability Director on strategy and both Sector and Project leadership to deliver the operational requirements of the Sir Robert McAlpine sustainability strategy and client requirements. They will also help grow the infrastructure business, working closely with work winning teams to communicate our expertise and value.
Responsibilities:
1. Strategy & Management
o Subject matter expert advice and guidance across all aspects of sustainability and environmental management
o Supporting the company sustainability strategy development and implementation
o Managing a team to deliver sustainability requirements on projects
o Representing the company on external groups
o Line Management and mentoring of sustainability resource in the infrastructure division
o Educating wider staff base within Infrastructure on sustainability
2. Work Winning & Preconstruction
o Use detailed understanding of client drivers and requirements and extensive knowledge of sustainable construction to provide expert advice to PQQ, tender and ECI / PSA phases of projects
o Client engagement and writing submissions that address client requirements and add value to both SRM and our Clients sustainability aspirations.
3. Construction
o Supporting live projects across the UK to deliver legal and contractual requirements
o Working with project teams to ensure legal compliance and implementation of our management systems
o Contributing to design & specification reviews to deliver performance required by both company and client requirements
o Advising on design, procurement and construction options and methodologies to improve sustainability performance
o Consulting with clients and external stakeholders
o Reviewing project and sector performance, identifying, and addressing areas of improvement and focusing support where required
o Sharing best practice and innovation across the infrastructure division and SRM business.
Skills and Qualifications
* Chartered Environmentalist via IEMA or CIOB
* Senior Leadership Team experience
* Line Management experience of a team of sustainability professionals
* Recent and relevant experience of providing highly technical sustainability support to complex Construction or Civil Engineering projects
* Expert understanding of environmental risks and management on Construction or Civil Engineering projects
* Excellent communication and influencing skills
* Ability to lead and manage the delivery of sustainability on multiple projects at the same time
* Knowledge and experience in working on Public Sector frameworks and projects
* Demonstrable experience in writing successful bid submissions and work winning
* Working knowledge of NHS Net Zero Building Standard and Social Value requirements
* Recent experience in environmental assessments (BREEAM, WELL, LEED, NABERS etc.)
* Whole life carbon reduction and monitoring & reporting
* Working knowledge of PAS2080 carbon management systems
* Experience of implementation and management of ISO14001 certified management systems
* Demonstrable skills in delivery of Circular Economy improvements
* Experience of biodiversity assessment and improvements
Our Infrastructure Division
Our Infrastructure division operates across the following key sectors – Highways, Nuclear, Defence & Healthcare. The Infrastructure division will grow over the coming years, currently operating across the UK in the following geographies:
* Cumbria
* London
* Newcastle
* Birmingham
There is flexibility in location as the role is supporting a national business, however the successful candidate will be required to regularly visit live projects and will have a base location in one of our regional offices, with a mix of office and working from home.
