The Finance and Procurement Office is looking to appoint a Financial Accountant to manage and oversee the tax affairs of the University and the University Group.
About Us
The University has a turnover approaching £400m. It employs over 3,000 (FTE) staff across 3 academic faculties, one school, and various support departments. The Finance and Procurement Office (FPO) manages the University’s income, expenditure, financial performance, and procurement processes, ensuring value for money. The department also provides management accounting support and ensures compliance with statutory and regulatory bodies.
This role reports to the Head of Financial Operations within a wider financial team and collaborates closely with the Financial Accounts team. Responsibilities include financial reporting, taxes (including VAT and corporation tax), treasury, income, tuition fees, studentships, payroll, pensions, credit control, and global mobility.
About You
You will be a qualified Accountant with experience in a complex organization. A solid understanding of HM Revenue & Customs rules, especially regarding VAT, is essential. You should also have:
* Strong communication skills, capable of conveying complex financial information clearly.
* Ability to develop effective working relationships with colleagues, external advisors, and bodies.
* Proficiency in IT and analytical skills.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
You will serve as the primary lead for indirect taxes (VAT), corporation, international, and other taxes within the University, acting as a key contact for VAT and tax guidance across the University community. You will work closely with the Financial Accounts team, external advisors, and line manage the Global Mobility Manager, supporting their development and prioritization of work.

This is a full-time role (36.5 hours/week). The department is based in the Virgil Building in Bath city centre, with occasional work on campus. Hybrid working is supported to promote work-life balance, with flexible remote working arrangements within the UK.
