Do you have developing specialty skills in paediatric dysphagia experience of working in an acute hospital? Our Inpatient and Feeding Speech and Language Therapy Team are looking for an experienced SLT to join them. We are currently recruiting to a 1.0 whole time equivalent band 6 fixed term position to cover a career break.
You would join our innovative and supportive team of 11 SLTs and a SLT Assistant. The team provides feeding and communication input to all 23 inpatient wards and 9 specialist outpatient feeding clinics. The inpatient and feeding team are part of the wider SLT department at GOSH comprising over 30 therapists.If you have postgraduate experience in the specialist assessment and management of both communication and swallowing difficulties in paediatrics as well as an enthusiasm for cutting-edge evidence-based practice, patient and family focused care, collaborative team working, quality improvement and innovation and digital transformation, we would very much like to hear from you. Main duties of the job
To provide a specialistspeech and language therapy service for in-patients with feeding and communication disorders arising from a wide range of rare and unusual conditions ensuring the highest standard of clinical care.
To provide specialist knowledge in the selection, appropriate application and interpretation of objective investigations of the oral-motor and pharyngeal aspects of feeding.
To counsel and advise patients, parents, and caregivers regarding congenital, acute onset and chronic feeding/communication problems and their consequences, sometimes in emotive and ethical situations regarding possible treatment options, including palliative care and quality of life issues and possible long term outcomes.
* To liaise regularly with the SLT line manager and use the Department's established supervision systems regarding service provision and more complex clinical case management
* To take responsibility for the management of onward referrals, in collaboration with senior colleagues, assuring timely response to referring agency, in liaison with the SLT admin team
To participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate speech and language therapy clinical training, and the teaching and training of other staff of different disciplines, in consultation with the Team Leader/Clinical Expert and Head of Speech and Language Therapy.

* Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
* Health Professions Council license to practice
* Accredited postgraduate courses in feeding difficulties at masters equivalent level
* SLT Clinical Master's Degree
* Advanced level dysphagia training
* Training in clinical and student supervision
Experience/Knowledge
* Principles of assessment and management of dysphagia in paediatrics
* Experience of interdisciplinary team working
* Experience of using informal and formal speech and language assessment and feeding techniques and tools for children across a range of age groups.
* Knowledge of a broad range communication assessment tools relevant to inpatient caseload.
* Knowledge of the impact of cultural issues for SLTs working with this caseload.
* Assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of neonates and older children presenting with communication and/or feeding difficulties.
* Evidence of providing SLT interventions for feeding and communication through a number of formats and experience of working in an acute hospital setting

Skills/Abilities
* Excellent communication skills balanced with an ability to recognize when to seek support.
* Skills in communicating outcomes of assessment and management plans to relevant internal and external professionals e.g. paediatricians, schools, speech and language therapists, play workers.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, sustained concentration and empathy with patients and relatives who themselves may have a range of complex communication impairments and other needs.
* Demonstrable specialist skills in the management of feeding and communication problems related to children with complex special needs.
* Principles of assessment and management of dysphagia in paediatrics.
* Demonstrable self-organisational skills, including prioritisation of the caseload
* Sound knowledge of IT packages, including use of Microsoft Office software
* Able to manage the emotional consequences of working with patients with a range of feeding and communication disorders.
* Highly developed negotiation, analytic and problem-solving skills
* High level verbal and written presentation skills
* Skills in motivating clients/carers to engage in the therapeutic process
