The job itself
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Environmental Services, Refuse Team for a Refuse Collector. You will work within a team of refuse collection operatives assisting in the safe operation of a refuse vehicle and providing a high standard refuse collection service to the residents of the East Riding.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Collecting household, industrial, and commercial waste from various locations such as domestic properties, commercial properties, and schools.
2. Transporting wheeled bins, plastic sacks, or bulk containers to the refuse collection vehicle from the premise curtilage or back door for pre-designated properties.
3. Completely emptying the contents into the vehicle without causing avoidable damage, noise, or spillage, and leaving the street clear of household rubbish.
4. Replacing the bins at the property/collection point, ensuring they do not obstruct footpaths or entrances.
5. Being willing to cover other services within streetscene services as required.
A suitable level of fitness is required to cope with the physical demands of the job, including the ability to walk for a minimum of 5 hours a day and the dexterity to move loaded wheeled bins. You must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and start work early in the morning. Initiative, good customer care, and communication skills are essential for this post.
Overtime or weekend work may be required to catch up on the refuse/recycling service after bank holidays, due to vehicle breakdown, inclement weather, or other operational pressures. On occasions, when the service dictates, you will be required to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank/Public Holidays, for which appropriate enhancements will be paid. There is also a requirement to work between Christmas and New Year.
The role is based at the Carnaby depot, but good local knowledge of other areas within the East Riding would be useful.
