This is a unique opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup and contribute to the development of cutting-edge satellite propulsion technology. We are seeking a highly skilled Physicist specialized in rarefied gas dynamics to lead the research and development efforts related to our air-breathing electric propulsion system for our satellites operating in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO).
In this role, you will apply your expertise in rarefied gas dynamics to optimize the interaction between the satellite's air-breathing propulsion system and the sparse atmospheric particles at ULEO altitudes, ensuring efficient propulsion performance and contributing to the success of long-duration satellite missions.
Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications, but it requires a propulsion system that can counteract drag from atmospheric particles. Rarefied Gas Dynamics Research: Conduct in-depth research on the behavior of gasses in rarefied conditions which are found in 200 km orbit, applying kinetic theory and statistical mechanics to model gas flow and interaction with satellite surfaces.
Surface Interaction Studies: Investigate gas-surface interactions within our propulsion system to enhance material selection and surface design for optimal performance.
D. in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, with a strong focus on rarefied gas dynamics, kinetic theory, or related areas.
Industry Experience: Proven experience in modelling and simulating rarefied gas dynamics, particularly in aerospace or related fields. Technical Expertise: Proficiency in numerical simulation techniques, particularly DSMC, and experience with relevant software tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C++).
Experience a rare level of involvement in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development, with opportunities to influence mission-critical systems
Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and hard work with a tangible stake in the company’s success.
If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
