GSL Education are currently seeking a dedicated and empathetic SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA) to support students across both Primary and Secondary settings in Chesterfield. This role provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, ASD, ADHD and those who have experienced trauma. This is a full-time role that requires a full UK driving licence, as you may be expected to travel between school sites or provide transport support for students.
Role Overview:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing tailored support to students who face barriers to learning due to social, emotional, or mental health difficulties. Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff, you will help create a structured and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued, understood, and motivated.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide individualised and small-group support to students with SEMH needs, ensuring they can access learning effectively.
* Assist students in managing emotional challenges and developing coping strategies within the school environment.
* Support teachers in adapting lesson plans and classroom activities to meet the needs of SEMH students.
* Implement behaviour management strategies to help students develop positive social interactions and self-regulation skills.
* Build strong, trusting relationships with students to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
* Liaise with SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals to support students' personal and academic progress.
* Promote inclusion, engagement, and self-confidence in students by encouraging participation in lessons and activities.
* Maintain accurate records of student progress and contribute to personalised education and behaviour plans.
* Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of all students.
Requirements:
* Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA), particularly with children exhibiting SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, or trauma.
* A strong understanding of the challenges faced by children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
* Must have a full UK driving licence.
* Ability to engage with children in a positive, nurturing and patient manner, building rapport and trust.
* A relevant qualification such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent, or an appropriate qualification in SEN.
* Experience working with children with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours.
* A calm, resilient and empathetic approach, with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being and development of vulnerable children.
* Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
