A little more about your role…
Due to our expanding workload, we are seeking a Senior Transport Planner/Engineer to join our Mobility Team in Guildford, Surrey. Working as part of an integrated team of engineers, planners, and modellers, and collaborating with various disciplines across our offices, you will contribute to the successful delivery of our wide portfolio of projects by providing mentoring and technical advice to our team members and a broad range of public and private sector clients.
* You will work within a team providing sustainable development solutions from site selection through to planning approvals and implementation. The mobility team’s work involves providing specialist advice to local authority and private sector clients on transportation and infrastructure issues and supporting proposals through the planning process. The team takes a strategic lead role on many large multi-disciplinary projects and works closely with our planning, infrastructure design, structures, and transport and environmental teams.
* You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to a senior member of the Mobilities Team to undertake the following:
* Provide day-to-day support in the delivery of concept studies/strategies, Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Parking Studies, Access Studies, and Movement and Access Studies, leading to planning applications, post-permission, and discharge of planning condition works.
* Proactively manage and lead to secure collaborative, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships with clients and colleagues.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with key clients based on achieving excellence in service provision with high levels of technical competence and client satisfaction.
* Keep up to date with relevant standards and policies; raise WSP profile by networking and attending conferences.
* You will be supported by a team of experienced and developing technical staff of various grades, to whom you will be expected to provide guidance and support as appropriate.
* Involvement in high profile client engagement, stakeholder management, design team liaison (both internal and with other external multidisciplinary professionals) and project management.
* Ensure your projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
Working closely with our associates and directors and supporting the professional development of our junior staff you will be an important member of our Mobility team. You will lead the preparation of fee proposals, contribute to and lead the preparation of high-quality transport planning studies, technical reports and project outputs, liaise with clients and stakeholders and support business development activities. The Mobility Team is a well-established and high performing discipline within the Communities and Mobilities business unit which includes colleagues focused on project delivery through the whole project life cycle, from planning support and design, through to scheme implementation.
Our vision is to be recognised as the best Mobilities team in the industry. We strive to achieve this through continuous improvement and a management structure comprising of four pillars, namely Technical Excellence, People, Clients and Operational Excellence.
We work with public/private sector clients, providing multi-disciplinary services which include:
* Liaising with clients, reviewing project briefs, tenders and task orders and preparing and contributing to high quality fee proposals;
* Engaging with clients and project team members including architects, engineers, planners, future mobility and environmental experts and other professionals;
* Representing WSP and our clients at meetings, workshops and forums including with local authorities, the public, regulatory bodies and interest groups;
* Taking a leading role in producing technical studies for our public sector local authority framework clients, including options assessments, feasibility studies, business cases and funding applications;
* Taking a leading role in producing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans for our private sector clients;
* Managing multiple projects including resourcing, technical and financial control to ensure delivery to high technical standards, within budget and on programme;
* Working as part of the team, delegating tasks and overseeing the technical project work produced by junior members of staff;
* Assisting the Team Leader and Directors in mentoring and supporting the professional and technical development of junior members of the team;
* Working in a large multi-disciplinary office with access to a wide range of people and collaboratively working on large scale projects.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
* A degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject;
* Substantial experience in contributing to and preparing transport studies, strategies, appraisals, Option Assessment Reports, and Business Case development for local authorities and/or Transport Assessments and Travel Plans and providing design advice to developers and architects;
* The ability to work at both strategic and detailed levels is highly desirable. Up to date knowledge on latest transport policies and legislations, Highways England and local authority design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 01/20) and planning processes applicable to the UK.
* Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools, excel spreadsheets, transport data analysis and presentation and transportation software including TRICS and junction modelling programmes (ARCADY, PICADY and LinSig);
* Ability to produce technical project and non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard;
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders, team members and present at meetings, workshops and public forums;
* Project management experience, with the ability to review client briefs and tenders, develop and contribute to fee proposals and lead project delivery including supervising workloads, task delegation, supporting junior staff and managing client expectations;
* Have a sound commercial awareness including effective financial management.
