GSL Education are looking for a passionate SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA) to join a supportive and inclusive school in Wareham. This position requires patience, resilience and a strong understanding of mental health and behavioural support strategies.
Role Overview:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will work closely with pupils who may be experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation, anxiety, trauma, or behavioural challenges. Your role will be vital in helping them to engage positively with their learning, develop coping strategies and build confidence in a structured and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide tailored one-to-one and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs, helping them develop emotional resilience and social skills.
* Assist in the implementation of Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) to address individual needs.
* Foster a positive, inclusive and structured learning environment, ensuring that pupils feel safe and supported.
* Support pupils with self-regulation techniques, promoting positive behaviour and engagement in lessons.
* Implement therapeutic and intervention-based approaches, such as mindfulness exercises, restorative practices and de-escalation strategies.
* Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral teams to provide holistic support for students.
* Encourage pupils to develop their independence, self-esteem and emotional intelligence through structured activities and mentoring.
* Provide academic support to ensure pupils remain engaged with their learning despite challenges they may face.
* Maintain accurate records and reports on pupil progress, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
Requirements:
* Previous experience working as an SEMH Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, or Learning Support Assistant is highly desirable.
* A qualification in Education, Psychology, Child Development, or Mental Health Support is advantageous.
* A strong understanding of mental health challenges, trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour management strategies.
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with pupils.
* A patient, calm and empathetic approach, ensuring pupils receive the support they need.
* Knowledge of alternative learning approaches such as therapeutic interventions, sensory-based strategies, or outdoor education.
* Resilience and adaptability, as you will be working in an environment that requires flexibility and a proactive mindset.
* Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
