Full Time (Part Time considered)
Required an enthusiastic and inspiring leader and teacher of Sport. The ideal candidate will have experience of or ability to lead the sporting programme from Years R to 11 and oversee the delivery of GCSE and Cambridge National programmes in PE and Sports Science. The opportunity arises due to expansion and the position is offered full-time although substantial part-time may be considered (no less than 70%).
St Edmund’s is an expanding and successful school of 620+ girls and boys aged 2 to 16 and there are currently twelve members of the Sports department. The school participates in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. Staff children may be educated at the school at a discount of up to 85% of the normal tuition fees. The school has excellent sports facilities on its 40-acre site including a Sports Hall opened 2021, an indoor swimming pool, an astroturf all-weather pitch, and a nine hole golf course. Sport appears in the weekly timetable from 0850 through to 1730 (sometimes later for cricket matches in the summer). It is desirable that applicants will be able to drive a school minibus when taking away teams.
St Edmund’s is thriving with numbers the highest in its 150-year history. Average class sizes are small, circa eighteen pupils. In 2024 our students posted a 97% GCSE pass rate (grades 4-9) against a national average of 67%. The proportion of grades awarded at 7-9 (the old A*/A) was 45% compared to a national average of 22%.
The school was inspected in October 2024 by ISI. The inspection was carried out under the protocols of the new ‘Framework 23’ and the reports do not contain an overall judgement or grading of the school. Therefore, schools are no longer rated “excellent” (our previous gradings) but instead the report focusses on the extent to which a school meets the criteria for the expected standards in an independent school. Schools are judged to have either ‘met’ or ‘not met’ the standards and, in the case of St Edmund’s, the inspectors judged that all standards were met. A synopsis and full copy of the inspection report are available on the school’s website.
