As the District Ambulance Lead for the West - Devon District, you will be the expert in all things ambulance for your district. You will support the District Manager with your specialist expertise and work alongside the District Community Operations & Event Operations Teams to plan and deliver the ambulance aspects of St John's operational output. Above all, you'll be accountable for the leadership and development of all our volunteer ambulance crews in your St John Ambulance district.
The successful applicant will be passionate about quality patient care being at the heart of all they do. They will lead a team of Local Ambulance Leads who will mentor, support, and guide all our ambulance crews while they provide exceptional care. You’ll be part of the regional Virtual Ambulance Unit and lead a team who will facilitate a network of development opportunities for our crews to develop in their role. Teamwork is key in this role; you'll work in collaboration with other leaders in Ambulance Operations & the wider Operations Directorate, as well as key supporting departments like the Regional Clinical Education Team, Logistics, Fleet and Assurance functions, and occasionally external stakeholders such as local NHS Ambulance Services and Local Resilience Fora. A key element of the role is supporting Local Ambulance Leads, Ambulance Hubs Leads, and Ambulance Crews to exceed the standards required by the Care Quality Commission (and other regulatory bodies).
To do this role well, you will need to bring a strong and credible ambulance background (SJA EAC, NHS EMT/AAP, or an appropriate healthcare professional). You’ll be a good general manager, used to managing geographically spread teams and dealing with a range of issues simultaneously. Given the pace of the role, you'll need to be a skilled delegator, able to use your team's skills, time, and knowledge to achieve more than you ever could on your own. You will be personable and inspiring, a good communicator with managerial, administrative, and excellent organisational skills, as well as the teamwork skills to get the most out of the whole St John family in order to support your crews. As a compassionate leader, you will need to embrace, influence, and champion the team to support and excel in our future growth and development and embrace quality improvement. This is a challenging and rewarding role. You will be key to our leadership teams, supporting all our people in their welfare and everyday activity. You'll be a key person in delivering the best experience to our ambulance volunteers, empowering them to achieve their potential and serve their communities, as well as a key voice in planning and delivering our regulated activity. You should have a desire and focus to expand, diversify, and improve the experience of our people, as well as a commitment to the concept of professional ambulance volunteering.
