We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join the Strategy & Regulation business area, supporting our strategic water resources programme.
What we do:
Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.
We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year.
The impacts of climate change, population growth and the need to protect the environment require us to take action to ensure resilient water supplies in the long-term. To meet these challenges, we are embarking on a significant programme of water resource and environmental projects spanning our Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP), Strategic Resource Options (SRO) and Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) commitments.
Where you fit in:
As an Environmental Specialist, you will coordinate and provide specialist environmental input into Yorkshire Water’s water resources programme. You will be based in the Environmental Assessment team within Yorkshire Water’s Strategy & Regulation function but working closely with the WRMP and SRO teams.
You will:
* Coordinate the environmental components of various environmental/water resources workstreams including WINEP studies, project/plan-level assessments and other strategic projects/research.
* Work alongside Yorkshire Water colleagues and our strategic planning partners to ensure a joined-up approach to environmental assessment across the WINEP, WRMP and SRO programmes.
* Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with regulators and external stakeholders.
* Review/QA technical documents and contribute to/author Yorkshire Water reports.
* Organise and/or supervise environmental surveys.
* Collate and manage environmental data sources/evidence.
* What skills and qualifications you will need:
* Hold a degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Geography, Hydrology, Environmental Impact Assessment) preferably with postgraduate qualifications.
* Considerable experience of working within the environmental assessment/planning sector, preferably including water industry or utilities experience.
* Practical experience of environmental assessment including Water Framework and Habitats Directive Regulations, preferably in a water resources context.
* Good knowledge of environmental/planning legislation and ability to interpret and articulate business implications.
* Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player with excellent organisational skills.
* Proficient with the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
* Ability to work within and across multi-disciplinary teams.
* Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
* Able to develop and maintain effective internal and external relationships.
* Ability to coach others on technical issues.
* Strong interpersonal skills, which are used to effectively influence and negotiate on environmental legislation matters at regional and national levels.
* Membership of appropriate professional body (e.g. IEMA, CIWEM).
Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life.
