The Role This position will see you supporting our Colney Heath branch by operating saw machinery and undertaking welding duties. You will ensure all products are cut and welded to the highest standards while adhering to safety regulations. You'll need to be someone who isn't afraid of hard work and is a team player. The Steel Department is one of the busiest areas of the Company so you would need to be willing to work under pressure. Branch Postcode - AL4 0PG Responsibilities of the Saw Operator/Welder Under the direction of the Workshop Manager, confidently construct and repair a variety of steel objects by operating welding equipment (MIG / TIG/ Arc), cutting, drilling, burning, bending and shaping tools and equipment to a high standard. We are looking for a multi-skilled individual who is capable of being a Saw Operator and a Welder. This role is heavily focused on being a competent saw operator and operating the Steel band saw cutting - RSJ steels to varying sizes. There is lots of potential to complete Welding duties during peak holiday season to support the Steels department. Strong experience with steel beams and cutting (essential) Cutting economically to minimise wastage Understanding part drawings to cut lengths of steel accordingly Ability to identify Steel beam types. Work from Structural Engineering drawings to fabricate Steel Beams and components for all types of structural steel. Undertake cleaning and preparing of steel. Attend jobs on site, to construct, install and repair steel work Performance of welding metal using a gas torch or arc welder. Planning and fabricating metal forms and objects. Reconstructing damaged articles of metal and alloys. Utilising hand tools, fixtures, jigs and clamps for small welding jobs. Accurately cutting metal using a torch, following diagrams, sketches and drawings. Fusing different metals to withstand great strength demands, whilst avoiding distortion. Regulating equipment as necessary for the work performed. Erecting steel structures on site. Cleaning and preparing all metal / steel. Using correct procedures to sling loads. Ability to work unsupervised and to actively mentor trainees. Wearing safety clothing and using protective equipment Be vigilant and report any Health & Safety issues to the Line Manager immediately. Keep work area clean and organised, reporting any machine malfunctions. Collaborate with team members to meet production targets and deadlines. Knowledge and skill requirements of the role MIG/TIG and Arc Welding – minimum of three years post training/apprenticeship. Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings. Confident Steel Erection and handling, including slinging loads for lifting. Operating Oxy/Propane cutting equipment. Experience in cutting, grinding and accurately using a saw. Steel cleaning and preparation.
