We are looking to recruit for a range of roles within our Signalling & Telecoms team across the Liverpool area. We want to fill Operative, Technician, and Team Leader roles which could be based out of one of our depots located in Liverpool Central, Edge Hill, Crewe, Chester & Warrington.
As part of the role, you will undertake inspection, faulting, signalling maintenance, and telecoms installation. An Operative is the first step in an S&T career but there are progression opportunities into Technician then Team Leader roles.
You will be enrolled on a 6-12 month training programme, which involves classroom and practical hands-on learning experiences. You will also be partnered with an experienced member of staff to help aid your training.
Signalling & Telecoms (S&T) offers a dynamic and diverse role that combines both electrical and mechanical engineering skills. There is a variety in tasks, from using electronic testing equipment to measuring critical electrical parameters to working with mechanical systems that guide trains, ensuring that no two days are the same.
You will be working on tasks such as:
1. Electrical measurements: Using advanced testing equipment to check the performance of signalling systems and ensure everything is running safely. As an Operative, you will be a key member of the team, carrying out tasks as directed by the Team Leader. You'll be responsible for ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required standards.
2. Mechanical work: Troubleshooting and repairing mechanical components, like the systems that control train directions, adds a hands-on, practical element to the role.
You will also check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment, and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.
This role is essential for maintaining the smooth functioning of operations and sets the foundation for career progression into more technical or leadership roles within Signalling & Telecoms.
Technician: This role builds upon the Operative position and adds more responsibility, including leadership, technical expertise, and oversight of work quality. You will provide support to the Team Leader to organise and motivate the team so that work is undertaken safely, efficiently, and to the relevant standards. Undertake inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal work as allocated and where directed, acting as Team Leader.
You'll also accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required and control and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant with standards.
Team Leader: In this role, we will look to you to direct, organise, and motivate a high-performing team as well as liaise with the management teams and other departments/companies. From inspection and faulting through to maintenance and renewal, you'll play a hands-on role.
You'll make sure everything is done efficiently and to the relevant standards and controls. You'll have experience of establishing the relevant safety arrangements for the tasks and ensure Network Rail staff and contractors alike follow safe systems of work. Proactively controlling and checking the quality of work and the competence of your people, you'll ensure that assets are fully compliant with the maintenance standards and all vehicles, plant, tools, equipment, and materials are safe & fit for purpose.

2. Mechanical problem-solving (e.g., repairing car engine faults).
3. Computerised logic systems (e.g., understanding and troubleshooting automated systems).
Whether you're new to the field or bringing experience from another technical discipline, there are plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement within Network Rail.
