We are seeking a research technician to join the research groups of Professor Nigel Hooper and Professor Catherine Lawrence within the Division of Neuroscience, in the School of Biological Sciences. The overall aim of the Hooper lab is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to neurodegeneration so as to identify new approaches for intervention in dementia. The Lawrence lab focuses on animal models of brain diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and vascular dementia, and how inflammation and co-morbidity contribute to these. Professor Hooper and Professor Lawrence are members of the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre, a partnership between the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, the University of Manchester and the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, which combines discovery science and experimental medicine to rapidly translate research into healthcare benefit to transform the lives of patients with neurological disease.
The post-holder will be working on an Alzheimer’s Research UK funded project to investigate whether a drug called methazolamide can restore the neuroprotection provided by angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and reverse the damage that occurs in Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, the post-holder will be assisting with investigating whether activation of ACE2 with methazolamide prevents or reverses neuron damage in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease.
The post-holder will be expected to provide technical support with minimal supervision to the post-doctoral researcher on the project, in a range of project specific research activities including:
1. Handling and experimentation of mice;
2. Running and troubleshooting of experiments;
3. Maintenance and use of research associated equipment.
The post-holder will also assist team members in ensuring that staff and students operate safe working practices ensuring health and safety compliance within the laboratories.
Successful candidates may be subject to pre-employment screening carried out on our behalf by a third party. The offer of employment will be dependent on the successful candidate passing that screening. While you will be required to provide express consent at a later stage, by continuing with your application now you acknowledge that you are aware that such screening will take place and agree to take part in the process.
Please note, under the new immigration rules this role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route of the Points Based System. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK in order to be eligible to take up the post.
