An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate band 7 Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are looking for a dynamic, experienced nurse with good communication skills, who has an interest in developing their CNS skills or extending their current portfolio of skills and abilities. You need to be able to prioritise your workload and assist us in meeting NHS cancer waiting times and personalised cancer care targets, whilst maintaining the patient experience and supporting them and their families through their pathway.
You will ideally be an experienced urology nurse, having had the experience of providing personalised care to people with prostate cancer in the urology and oncology setting. You should have excellent time management and advanced communication skills.
Experience in running nurse led clinics would be desirable although not essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a key member of the Urology multi-disciplinary team.
1. To act as a resource of expert advice, carry own case load and provide coordination of care and support to patients with Urology malignancies and their family / carer from diagnosis and through all stages of their disease, treatment modalities and follow up care.
2. To liaise and work closely with other professionals involved in the patients care journey and provide specialist knowledge, expertise and education for staff within the Trust to ensure a smooth patient pathway for all patients with Urology malignancies.
3. To develop and monitor standards of care for patients following National guidelines.
4. To act as a key worker for patients with or are suspected of having Urological cancer. Ensuring patients have information details of the MDT and contact number of key worker.
5. To ensure all National data requirements are collected & entered on the appropriate databases. These include local and national audits such as NPCA & Quality of Care.

Job responsibilities
Professional / Clinical
1. To communicate and work in partnership with all members of the MDTs to ensure a seamless pathway of care for patients from diagnosis through treatment and follow up care.
2. To be an autonomous practitioner and manage own caseload and work with colleagues to provide the highest possible standards of care for patients diagnosed with a urology cancer.
3. To support and co-ordinate patients / family / carer from diagnosis onwards through all stages of their disease and treatment modalities and utilise excellent communication skills to complete appropriate onward referrals for your cohort of patients.
4. To act as point of contact and offer to be the Urology keyworker for patients and their families and carer.
5. Ensure the Holistic Nurse Assessments are completed for all patients at key points of their cancer treatment pathway. You will be required to liaise with and ensure referral and appropriate signposting onto allied health professionals and services as required.
6. To provide and offer a wide range of information and support to patients their family and/or carers at all stages of their cancer journey this includes access and utilisation of Information, Prescriptions and signposting to the Whittington Health Macmillan Information space.
7. To competently act as the patients, advocate and assist patients in understanding their disease and treatments available to them, to enable them to make informed choices about their care.
8. Assist in the co-ordination of patient treatment pathways between the various departments in both primary and secondary care to facilitate continuity of care.
9. To attend the relevant Urology outpatient clinics. These include: One stop PSA clinics and those where patients are given a cancer diagnosis.
10. To be a core member of the Urology MDT and attend the palliative care and site-specific MDTs where Urology patients are being discussed and as deemed appropriate.
11. To establish links and develop networking opportunities with other Urology CNSs.
12. To support and assess all urology cancer in-patients and liaise with ward staff and Consultants as deemed appropriate and provide a seamless approach to communication to enhance the patients pathway and experience.
13. To ensure that patients are referred onto other health care professionals and services to ensure a seamless, high-quality pathway of care for them, their families and carers.
14. To establish and maintain close working relationships with the Hospital and relevant Community Macmillan Palliative care teams.
15. To be responsible in ensuring accurate and comprehensive documentation in all patients' notes which include the trusts EPR and Somerset Cancer database system.
16. To work as part of the MDTs core member and actively participate in the National Cancer Peer review process.
17. To regularly attend the Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Forum and participate in the agreed projects/work streams as agreed by the group.
18. To provide CNS cover for cancer/Urology CNS colleagues during leave and absence.
19. To be competent in managing your own timetable and caseload. This includes managing the One Stop PSA clinic with minimal supervision from Urology consultant.
20. To ensure that robust PSA patient tracking is completed in partnership with the MDT Coordinator.
21. To possess exemplary time management skills.
Education and Training
1. In conjunction with the Lead Cancer Nurse, identify education and training needs of relevant staff and develop education programmes to meet the identified needs.
2. Ensure learning materials are available in clinical areas.
3. Continually update and maintain own personal development and specialist knowledge base through a set of trust Cancer Nurse Specialist core competencies with an approved mentor.
4. To be responsible for undertaking all statutory and mandatory training updates.
5. Act as specialist resource and provide information and advice for staff both in primary and secondary care settings through a variety of formats.
6. Provide training to staff / professionals within Trust/ community on unknown primary cancers and their treatments.
7. Assist in producing any relevant literature to aid patient and health professional information.
8. To ensure and be responsible for continuously updating specialist knowledge and skills in relevant field.
9. To be responsible for ones own knowledge and awareness of all relevant Trust policies and protocols.
10. To present and attend local, regional and national conferences as required and as deemed applicable.
11. To actively participate in formal/informal education sessions within the trust and with external organisations including university programmes.
Quality, Research and Audit
1. Participate in both clinical and organisational audits, continually evaluating the effectiveness of the service provided against trust and national standards.
2. To attend, participate and present at departmental audit meetings.
3. To undertake research / audit topics appropriate to Urology and disseminate findings to relevant audiences through a variety of modes.
4. To actively participate in multi-disciplinary research projects.
5. To participate in the collection of data required by the Trust to input into the cancer registry and Somerset cancer database.
6. To encourage user involvement to identify potential areas for service development.
7. To actively participate in local, network and national patient satisfaction surveys and provide detailed action plans to assist in improving patient experience, pathway and service provision.
Management and Supervision Responsibilities
1. To constantly review the urology cancers service provision, development and patient feedback in liaison with your line manager in collaboration with the Lead Cancer Nurse and relevant MDT members.
2. To undertake and understand appropriate risk within area of practice.
3. Act as a resource within your role as a senior nurse, advisor and liaison for issues relating to staff within the Trust, Primary Care and Tertiary Centres (This includes junior doctors, imaging consultants and radiographers, histopathology, medical secretaries, ward staff at all levels and clerical staff).
4. To produce an annual report detailing the service of which you work within for the manager, MDT and Macmillan Cancer Support outlining the key achievements in your role, a clear demonstration of the numbers within your case load over the last year and include any future aims, developments, projects/plans in the future for service.
5. To participate in Service Development Plans.
6. To identify a supervisor and participate in a monthly clinical supervision session as set out by the Cancer Nurse Specialist core competencies.
7. To be visible and accessible to patients, ensuring cover is arranged for periods of absence or leave.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Teaching qualification or extensive experience (e.g., ENB 998)
* Educated to degree level or currently pursuing a degree
* Relevant post-registration qualification in urology care, oncology, or palliative care
* Evidence of recent professional development
* Experience in urology and/or oncology at Band 6 level or above
* Advanced communication skills training
* Counselling qualification preferred
* Masters level educated
