Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But that’s what’s behind every job at Scottish Water.
Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant. Want to join us? We are looking for a Carbon Specialist in the Commercial Carbon section of our Cost Intelligence Team.
This is a unique opportunity to join a brand-new team dedicated to delivering Scottish Water’s strategic ambition of Beyond Net Zero by 2040. The team will ensure robust carbon quantification for all capital projects, identify and support the implementation of emissions reduction opportunities, and integrate carbon reduction into decision-making processes by providing strategic insights and governance. The team will support colleagues across the Commercial team and wider Scottish Water to embed carbon reduction into the lifecycle of all capital projects.
The location will be flexible and includes hybrid working but will be based in one of our office locations at FMH (Edinburgh), The Bridge (Glasgow), Bullion House (Dundee) or Henderson Drive (Inverness). The role will report to the Senior Carbon Specialist/Commercial Carbon Team Leader.
What you’ll do
You’ll be responsible for supporting the estimating teams on carbon queries, calculating first principles carbon values, and developing reports on project carbon hotspots.
You’ll review carbon quantifications in the Benchmark Estimating System (BES), ensuring accuracy and consistency across projects.
You’ll help to highlight key areas for improvement and reduction by identifying and reporting on carbon-intensive areas.
Your expertise will be instrumental in embedding carbon reduction strategies into projects, aligning with Scottish Water’s commitment to sustainable investment.
What you’ll need
* Experience of carbon accounting and identification of reduction strategies.
* Knowledge of carbon management and accounting standards such as PAS 2080, RICS whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) standard and BS EN 15978:2011, BS EN 17472:2022, and BS EN 15804:2012.
* Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
* Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Power BI and the ability to adapt to new systems quickly.
* Ability to work collaboratively within the team, across Scottish Water and with external partners.
* Good communication and reporting skills. Ability to communicate complexity and uncertainty.
* Relevant qualification in environmental or carbon management would be advantageous but not necessary.
* Experience in the construction industry and specifically the water industry would be an advantage but not essential.
* Knowledge of Methods of Measurement in construction (e.g., CESMM, NRM)

Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
