Working as part of a small Scotland-based team, in this role you’ll focus on Scottish news to assist The Telegraph’s news and politics desks in their day-to-day coverage.
You’ll be a self-starter who is comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy. While the principal focus is on reporting, this role also presents an opportunity to play a key role in the production of the Scottish edition.
Key Responsibilities
1. Using your contacts to source and break regular exclusive stories which will lead the news agenda.
2. Managing a diary which allows you to cover emerging stories, events and announcements.
3. Liaising with the newsdesk to ensure your stories are given the best possible coverage online and in print.
4. Self-publishing your stories online in a way which drives engagement and subscriptions.
5. Excellent knowledge of Scottish current and political affairs.
6. Previous experience of working in a national media newsroom.
7. Strong news judgement, specifically in relation to the Scottish edition.
8. Experience of using a range of digital storytelling techniques, online publishing and SEO.
9. Have a good working understanding of social media channels.
10. Exemplary organisational skills.
11. Previous experience of political journalism would be advantageous.
12. A flexible approach, gained from being part of a small team which handled a range of priorities.
13. Experience of compiling news lists and briefing sub-editors.
14. Ability to make judgements about pictures and headlines etc.
