About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About The Role
We now have an opportunity for an Mecatronics technician (Internally known as a Motion Systems Technician) to give operational support of motion systems in the design, development and operation of the accelerators and/or beamlines on the Diamond Synchrotron. The work is primarily electrical but will include some mechanical work.
Motion Control manages the low-level motor controllers, motors and encoders to achieve precision control necessary to manage the properties of photon beam i.e. wavelength, focus and to position and manipulate experiment samples in arbitrary movements such as scanning through reciprocal lattice space. As photon beams become smaller and brighter than there is need for greater precision in controlling samples and optics, but also greater need to move the sample more quickly to fully utilise the available photon brightness by triggering the detector in a shorter period of time.
You Will
1. Provide support in commissioning of motion control systems
2. Making custom cables and adapters
3. Modifications to electro-mechanical equipment
4. Characterising motion control system to establish the required performance
5. Undertaking the testing, fault finding and calibration of modules
6. Maintaining records of module history
About You
You will have served a recognised Apprenticeship in an appropriate Engineering discipline, and to have gained a minimum of a level 3 qualification. Applicants with relevant or equivalent on-the-job experience will also be considered.
You Will Also Have
1. Experience with LV Electrical systems.
2. Familiarity with using Safe Systems of work, permits, risk assessments, etc.
3. Capacity to understand and interpret electrical drawings and basic mechanical drawings.
4. Ability to carry out a variety of light mechanical and electrical assembly tasks, including soldering.
5. Ability to use standard electronic measurement instruments including oscilloscopes and digital volt meters.
Experience with LV inspection and testing and Electrical cabling to 18th Edition Wiring Regs would be desirable but not essential.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
To Apply
Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role. The closing date for applications is 6th April 2025, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
