The Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist will be expected to demonstrate a higher level of practice in both her/his direct care of patients and in her/his ability to plan and develop services to support cancer care. Through the key skills of leadership, innovation, and clinical expertise s/he will facilitate and deliver care which is patient centered, delivered with compassion, safe, and effective (see figure below).
The CNS is a core member within the multidisciplinary care team (MDT) and through demonstration of these higher-level skills s/he will work collaboratively with clinicians and service managers to promote, develop, review and redesign the relevant services which are responsive and tailored to patient’s needs.
Main duties of the job
The Royal Marsden is host to a world leading centre of excellence for urology cancer care and research in prostate, bladder, testicular and renal cancers. This centre has a long history of medical and nursing innovation achieved through their work with both charitable organisations and industry partners. Diagnostics, treatment and care are coordinated by teams of experts across Clinical and Medical Oncology and Specialist Urology Surgery. Our service has been at the forefront of urology cancer care for > 30 years providing expert medical and nursing care to ensure the best possible cancer treatment and supportive survivorship care. This service is delivered across both Marsden sites in Chelsea and in Sutton.
Basic Requirements for Urology CNS:
·Registered Nurse (with active NMC registration)
·First level degree in related subject
·Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards
·Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care/urology or relevant subject
·Evidence of continued professional development
·Recognised teaching or mentoring qualification or working towards

1. The CNS will use advanced communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care and support.
2. To act as a keyworker for a clinical caseload incorporating the responsibilities of the key worker role, working to coordinate care and provide easy and timely access for ongoing support for patients.
3. To lead in-depth discussions about the patients’ particular diagnosis, all treatment options, including research based treatments with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise to enable patients to make an informed choice. To act as patient advocate when appropriate and respect patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements.
4. To influence the patient care pathway, refer to other professionals, and sign-post patients to other agencies and services as appropriate.
5. To provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across service and organizational boundaries.
6. To sustain a high quality specialist service for the patient throughout their journey
7. In conjunction with the clinical team, to undertake risk stratification for patients having cancer follow up.

Essential criteria
8. Registered Nurse with active NMC registration.
9. First level degree in related subject
10. Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards

13. Be willing to undertake Trust CNS role development programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
