An opportunity has arisen for a Band 2 Phlebotomist to join our team at the Southport and Ormskirk sites.
Applications are invited from flexible, hardworking individuals for this part-time post. Previous phlebotomy experience is desirable but further training will be given on appointment.
This post will be based at Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals and applicants will be expected to work at other sites within the Trust. You will be required to work in the Outpatient Department and on the wards. It is a 7 day service and staff will be required to work weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job
* To undertake the collection and labelling of venous blood samples.
* Transport samples to the agreed Laboratory reception within an agreed time frame.
* To maintain good working relations with all members of staff and to promote effective teamwork.
* To actively participate in team meetings and to inform effectively on shift handover.
* To advise the Senior Phlebotomist when stocks of consumables are approaching minimum levels or to take appropriate action in ordering.
* To be courteous to patients, relatives, and carers.
* To have a manner which will put patients at ease.
Job responsibilities
KEY DUTIES
* To manage own patient list.
* To work as part of a team but to also act autonomously within the clinical setting.
* Promote good public relations with patients.

* Responsible for personal effective time management and organisational skills.
* Work without direct supervision reporting to the Phlebotomy Service Lead.
* Responsible for taking reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others.
* Work unsupervised.
* Report accidents or incidents (to patients or self) which occur whilst on duty to the care manager.
* Complete appropriate forms as soon as possible and participate in any investigations as necessary.
* Report any complaints to the Phlebotomy Service Lead and participate in any investigation as necessary.
CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Safe collection of routine venous blood samples from patients as requested by doctor and/or nurses in line with Trust Policy.
* Prepare blood samples for transport ensuring stability and safety.
* To make informed decisions relating to patient care and safety.
* To comply with identified operational procedures regarding blood sample collection.
* To adhere to the Trust's Health and Safety at Work Policy.
* To ensure that own phlebotomy trolley is cleaned thoroughly and restocked with consumables by completion of duty.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
* Comply with the Trust's policy on documentation in relation to recording of blood tests etc., including data entry onto computer systems as required.
* Always maintain confidentiality.
* To undertake such other agreed duties as may be appropriate to the post for the efficient provision of the service.
* To maintain appropriate ordering of equipment and ensure same is fit for purpose.
* To ensure Line Manager is kept informed regarding absence due to sickness, as soon as possible.
* To provide Line Manager with a minimum four weeks notice for any annual leave requests.
* To ensure effective communications with Line Manager.
* To attend regular team meetings in order to share knowledge, ideas and acknowledge any developments/changes that impact upon the phlebotomists role.
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
* To participate in continuing education and to implement evidence-based practice.
* To assist the Senior Phlebotomist in the training and supervision of new staff members in accordance with the training policies.
* To act as support to other members of staff.
* To engage in additional training to meet the changing demands of phlebotomy clinics.
* Attend necessary mandatory training as identified by the Trust.
RESEARCH & AUDIT
* To identify and manage clinical risk and to report concerns to line manager.
* To participate in data collection for audit purposes relating to the phlebotomy service.
* To ensure relevant research and audit outcomes are implemented in practice.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Be able and willing to study to NVQ Level 2.
Knowledge & Experience
* Have previous experience working with the public on a one-to-one basis.
* Previous experience of working in a Healthcare setting.
Skills
* Demonstrates an ability to learn, to be able to pass the phlebotomy competency assessment.
* Must have the ability to put patients at ease and remain calm in an emergency situation.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Maintain a flexible approach to work.
* Ability to work with minimum of supervision.
* Willing to learn new skills and develop professionally.
Other
* Able to travel between Trust sites.
* Ability to cope with the physical demands of the role.
