Job Title: Mechanical Systems Engineer
Salary: £47,615 + per annum dependent upon experience
Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

About IPSD
Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary
The Mechanical Systems team have a vacancy for a Mechanical Systems Engineer who will be supporting all aspects of mechanical system performance, reliability & durability - for both NPI (New Product Introduction) programs & current production engines.
What You Will Do
* Working within a virtual platform team - taking ownership, using initiative and delivering tasks/projects. Subject Matter Experts will provide support as needed.
* Identification of System Integration requirements, cascading Product Objectives through to Technical Objectives, and performing system level trade offs.
* Creation of Engine System Failure Mode Effective Analysis' (FMEA), supporting risk identification and facilitating the creation of system & component validation plans (DVP – Design Verification Plan).
* Project Management of engine build and test plans, delivering product validation tests through both our onsite test facility and in application.
* Review engine and machine data from validation tests and in field usage.
* Liaise with application leads & customers to negotiate in field validation opportunities.
* Collaborate with component & test engineers to drive decision making from engine data reviews and end of test inspections.
* Support Technical Issue resolution.
What You Will Have
Technical Excellence - Expert Level
* A Systems Engineering approach to product development.
* Demonstrated experience of Engine Design, Development or Simulation.
* Demonstrated experience of planning validation and test requirements.
* Experience of DFMEA facilitation and creation.
Effective Communication - Working Knowledge
* Good communication skills, both written and working as part of a team.
Problem Solving - Working Knowledge
* Ability to interrogate data with experience of engines or similar applications.
Top Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:
* Experience of Root Cause investigation techniques.
* 6 Sigma Methodology, Continuous Process Improvement & Lean.
* Experience of applications with construction machinery or generating sets.
* Experience of Proactive Reliability methods and demonstration of Product Quality.
* Experience of industrial diesel engines.

We have a lot of exciting projects in flight meaning the demand on our Systems Engineering team is high. To be successful, we must focus on and deliver standard work – requirements setting, early risk identification & robust mitigation, technical issue management to name some key areas. The role is within our Peterborough Engineering & Technology centre where you will work alongside a range of system and validation specialists, with support and collaboration from Engineers across facilities in US, China, India, and Japan. Opportunities for growth and further responsibility will be available for the successful candidate in role.
