Job overview
There is an exciting opportunity for a senior band 7 pharmacy technician to lead and manage the provision of a pharmacy technical service to the intensive care units and theatres at the Royal Free Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for all technical aspects of medicines management in these areas and for development and delivery of the pharmacy technical service to these areas.
The post holder will consistently work in an accurate, effective, and efficient manner to support the provision of a high-quality service to patients, trust staff and departments. They will be part of a high performing team that is expected to demonstrate the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust values.
Main duties of the job
The main role of this post holder will be to establish and manage the provision of a pharmacy technical service to the intensive care units, theatres (including day surgery) and resuscitation team at the Royal Free Hospital.
In addition, they will also establish and manage the provision of a clinical technical service to the intensive care units at the Royal Free Hospital and be responsible for all technical aspects of medicines management. This includes helping to complete the medicines reconciliation process for all patients and ensuring safe, appropriate and timely supply of medicines.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities
* Provide a full and comprehensive dispensing service to patients attending the intensive care units and theatres.
* Deliver an efficient ward-based service to ensure the accurate and timely supply of medicines.
* Accurate medicines reconciliation through GP communication.
* Medical notes interpretation.
* Assessment of patients’ own drugs and confirming accuracy with the patient or relatives where appropriate.
* Resolving discrepancies with the prescriber or referring them to the pharmacist.
* Supply medicines promptly for all ICU patients.
Responsibility for Patients
* Accurately prepare and check prescriptions in a timely manner.
* Liaise with primary care healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care for patients on discharge.
* Support the provision of patient-focused activities regarding their medicines.
Person specification
Education & professional Qualifications
* Accreditation in Medicines management (AIMM), Medicines Optimisation Programme (MOP) or equivalent relevant experience.
* Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Experience
* Considerable post qualification experience in medicines management at ward level in ITU and theatres.
* Previous assessable supervisory experience.
Skills and aptitudes
* Demonstrated ability to develop standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Effective problem-solving skills.
Others
* Able to work late duties, weekend duties and bank holidays as rostered.
