Anatomical Pathology Technologist (SC6) – Technical Department: Pathology / Mortuary Services Reports To: Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist / Pathology Manager Job Summary The Anatomical Pathology Technologist (SC6) - Technical plays a crucial role in the mortuary and pathology department, assisting with post-mortem examinations, specimen processing, and the maintenance of health and safety standards within the laboratory. The role requires technical expertise in histopathology and mortuary procedures, adherence to ethical and legal frameworks, and excellent attention to detail to support pathologists in delivering high-quality services. Key Responsibilities Post-Mortem and Laboratory Support Assist pathologists during post-mortem examinations, including forensic and hospital post-mortems. Handle, label, and process tissue samples for histological examination. Perform reconstruction of bodies post-examination, ensuring presentation in a dignified manner. Support the preparation and management of specimens, ensuring correct storage and disposal in compliance with regulatory standards. Health & Safety and Compliance Adhere to infection control, hygiene, and decontamination procedures. Follow health and safety protocols, including risk assessments and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations. Ensure all documentation and records comply with professional and legal standards (e.g., Human Tissue Act). Assist in maintaining mortuary and laboratory equipment, including regular checks and reporting of malfunctions. Technical & Administrative Duties Accurately record patient and case information in pathology databases. Assist with maintaining stock levels of consumables and ordering supplies when required. Contribute to quality assurance and audit processes within the department. Liaise with medical staff, coroners, police, and funeral directors where appropriate. Qualifications & Experience Essential: Diploma or Degree in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent qualification. Experience working in a mortuary, histopathology lab, or forensic environment. Strong understanding of post-mortem procedures, health & safety, and infection control. Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Human Tissue Act and GDPR. Desirable: Registration with the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) or equivalent governing body. Previous experience in a forensic pathology setting. Competence in using pathology laboratory information systems. Working Conditions Exposure to potentially distressing situations and deceased individuals. Requirement to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Shift work, including weekends and on-call duties, may be required
