Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Ward Clerk to the Ambulatory Emergency care unit at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. We triage and assess patients direct from GP's, Emergency Department/clinics, or from our multidisciplinary teams based in the community. The patients are seen, assessed, and treated, then discharged or admitted. This is an opportunity to become part of a dynamic team in a demanding fast-paced environment with a high turnover of patients that is committed to delivering the best quality care.
The candidates we are looking for must work well within a team, be efficient with computer systems, be able to communicate effectively over the telephone, and be competent in general admin duties.
Main duties of the job
* Assist in the reception of patients and relatives to the unit.
* Clerical duties associated with the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
* Enter patient information on the Trust's computerized system (CERNER) and obtain relevant electronic wristband.
* Communicate with patients, visitors, and colleagues by telephone, face-to-face, or in writing, in furtherance of the effective running of the unit.
* Ensure case notes are efficiently maintained, including filing episodic clinical and nursing notes and investigation reports.
* Request x-rays and pathology reports from the appropriate departments.
* Communicate/consult with other departments, internal and external to the Trust e.g., Patient Services, Community Matrons, Social Workers, Health Visitors, and Ambulance service.
* Make follow-up appointments for patients when necessary, request outpatient diagnostics as requested.
* Collect and distribute mail for patients and staff.
* General office duties e.g., filing, photocopying, and errands.
Person specification
* 6 months’ clerical experience
* Keyboard/Computer skills, numeracy, and literacy skills
* Satisfactory pre-employment medical assessment.
* Clear and accurate written/verbal communication and effective listening skills.
* Provide reasonable flexibility in terms of hours worked, including weekends. Willing to adapt to the changing needs of the service.
* Demonstrate a friendly and caring manner.
* Proven ability to work in a team, be supportive of team members.
* Proven ability to take on board new ideas, skills, and knowledge.
* Proven ability to use own initiative and work without close supervision.
* Proven ability to deal with confidential information in an appropriate manner.
* Previous Trust experience.

In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied.
The cost of an Enhanced Disclosure will be £42.90 and for a Standard Disclosure £22.90 which includes a small handling fee.
This cost is not applicable for a Volunteer post.
