Introduction:
We are recruiting for an experienced Principal Structural Engineer/ Technical Director on behalf of a well-established engineering consultancy based in Preston. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong technical expertise to lead and co-ordinate civil and structural design projects across a range of sectors including nuclear, utilities, water, and more. The role will offer the opportunity to oversee projects from design through to completion while supporting and mentoring a team of engineers.
Role Overview:
As a Principal Structural Engineer/ Technical Director, you will play a key leadership role, responsible for ensuring high-quality technical delivery across projects. You will be guiding and mentoring junior engineers while overseeing the technical outputs across the team. The role also requires strong project management skills to ensure projects are completed within budget and timeline constraints.
This position offers flexibility with the ability to work from home for part of the week. However, occasional travel to client sites and meetings may be necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
* Technical Leadership & Project Oversight:
* Lead and co-ordinate the delivery of civil and structural design projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective results.
* Provide technical guidance and oversight for the design process, from initial scope through to final project delivery.
* Represent the company in design reviews and client meetings, ensuring high-quality solutions are provided.
* Ensure that design documents meet client specifications and industry standards.
* Team Development & Mentorship:
* Lead, coach, and mentor junior engineers, fostering a collaborative team environment.
* Provide ongoing support for team members’ professional development and technical growth.
* Encourage continuous improvement within the engineering team by promoting knowledge sharing and skills development.
* Project Management & Client Interaction:
* Manage project budgets, track performance, and provide forecasts for project costs.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring projects meet their goals efficiently.
* Promote a safety-focused working environment, adhering to best practices in design and delivery.
* Coordination & Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration:
* Ensure the successful integration of design outputs across multiple disciplines.
* Adhere to client and company standards for design practices, managing any design changes effectively.
Required Skills & Experience:
* Chartered Civil/ Structural Engineer with a minimum of 10 years' experience in leading and delivering projects.
* Proven background in steel and concrete structures, including water-retaining structures, with compliance to British Standards and Eurocodes.
* Nuclear sector experience (including decommissioning works) is desirable but not essential.
* Proficiency with relevant software tools, including STAAD PRO, TEDDS, AutoCAD, Revit, and Excel.
* Strong leadership experience in managing and mentoring engineering teams, especially within nuclear, water, and utilities sectors.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on client engagement and team collaboration.
* A strong commitment to safety, quality, and client satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
Additional Information:
* Flexible working: Minimum 3 days per week in the office, with the remaining days available for home working (subject to project requirements).
* Travel requirements: Occasional site visits within the northwest region, particularly to operational sites.
* Security clearance: This role requires security clearance, and candidates must be willing to undergo a vetting process via UK Security Vetting. Proof of UK residency for at least 5 years may be required.
