Registered Nurse - Aylesford / Rigby Unit

Are you a caring, enthusiastic and innovative registered nurse, competent at intravenous drug administration and with a minimum of 12 months acute post registration experience? If so we would like to hear from you to join our highly motivated and innovative teams.
You will work flexibly across The Aylesford Unit (on the Warwick site) and The Rigby Unit (on the Stratford site) when Service need dictates.
The posts offer an exciting opportunity to further develop your clinical and managerial skills within a supportive environment. You will care for a variety of day case patients; the majority of these patients will have cancer. Good communication skills and the ability to work as a team player are essential. Haematology or oncology experience plus clinical skills in venepuncture, peripheral cannulation and chemotherapy administration are desirable but not essential as full training will be given.
You will primarily work from Monday to Friday. This may also include evenings, Saturdays and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis. Flexible team working is essential to meet our service needs.

Main duties of the job
To perform a pivotal role within the nursing team. To be responsible for the assessment of care needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care. To supervise junior staff. To support the senior nurses in the management of the chemotherapy suite, adhering to the policies of the Trust. To deputise for the Clinical Sister in her/his absence.

Job responsibilities
Key Result Areas:
Nursing
1. To lead a team of nurses in the delivery of a high standard of care to a group of patients.
2. To be a named nurse/key worker for patients.
3. To undertake specialist care for patients including the management of patients receiving Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy and the management of neutropenic sepsis.
4. To undertake venepuncture, peripheral cannulation, intravenous drug and Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy administration.
5. To participate in venesections and other procedure clinics.
6. To ensure that a high standard of care is maintained.
7. To identify any weaknesses that are evident in the delivery of care.
8. To ensure that documentation is appropriate and up to date.
9. To ensure that all relevant data is collected.
Communication
1. To maintain good communication with the multi-disciplinary team.
2. To maintain good communication with patients and their relatives ensuring they are given as much information relating to their investigations and their disease.
3. To communicate complex and sensitive information to patients/carers with cancer.
Education
1. To be a role model and perform the role of Mentor to Student Nurses & Preceptor to newly qualified staff.
2. To develop opportunities for the training and development of staff.
3. To participate in the induction programmes of new staff.
4. To evaluate the outcome of learning experiences.
5. To participate in the patient education process.
Management
1. To provide support to peers and junior staff.
2. To participate in the management of off duty rotas.
3. To participate in promoting innovative practice within the unit.
4. To monitor the safe and effective use of supplies.
5. To comply with and ensure that all staff are working in accordance with Trust policies and procedures e.g. patients property, cardiac arrest, fire policy, health and safety, discipline and grievance procedures, major emergency, infection control and that the NMC guidance and Code of Professional Conduct is followed.
6. To attend professional meetings and keep abreast of current development.
Research
1. To base own practice on current research.
2. To evaluate current research findings and if appropriate implement into practice on the ward.
3. To participate in clinical audit.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* First Level RN, 12 months experience within acute environment.
* Moving and handling, basic CPR IT Skills, intravenous drug administration.
* Venepuncture and cannulation skills.
* Teaching and assessing qualification.
* Degree/Diploma in health related subject.
* Recognised chemotherapy qualification.
Experience
* Chemotherapy administration.
Skills
* Demonstrates a sound understanding of patient care needs.
* Able to efficiently plan, delegate and supervise others.
* Aware of current NHS issues and priorities.
* Able to manage clinical area effectively in absence of senior staff.
