An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with relevant skills, experience, and knowledge to join the Maternity Team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB).
The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner who will offer support, knowledge, and advice to newly qualified midwives during preceptorship, internationally educated midwives in their first year of appointment, and new starters/returners during their induction and supernumerary period.
You will be working as part of a Specialist midwifery team across the three main hospital sites - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow-in-Furness, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, with a focus on Recruitment and Retention, Clinical Skills, and Support of midwives.
You can choose your preferred site, but you will be expected to travel to other sites as required.
Main duties of the job
As the Recruitment and Retention, Clinical Skills and Support of midwives, the post holder will:
1. Be responsible for offering robust support to newly qualified midwives during preceptorship and internationally educated midwives within their first year of appointment.
2. Ensure and deliver a coordinated approach to the onboarding and induction of new starters, supporting clinical skill development and working towards clinical competencies.
3. Offer pastoral support, mentorship, and preceptorship.
4. Develop, implement, and evaluate retention activities and deliver preceptorship standards and evaluation.
5. Act as an expert clinician role model and provide professional advice and clinical skills teaching for midwives in the clinical practice setting.
6. Support the implementation of key projects related to staff retention and pastoral care for staff, as identified by the Director of Midwifery and Heads of Midwifery.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Registered Midwife
* Teaching and assessing qualification
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* MSc in Midwifery or evidence of working towards
* Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
* Formal Leadership training and/or qualification
Experience
* Significant relevant clinical experience in midwifery across all settings
* Experience in supporting students/learners, newly qualified midwives, and/or new starters/returners
* Experience in initiating and managing change
* Experience in teaching workforce in clinical skill development
* Experience in delivering mandatory training and/or skills and drills simulations
Skills, ability and knowledge
* Ability to prioritise and demonstrate time management and organisational skills
* Demonstrate advanced clinical skills in midwifery and the ability to teach these to others
* Awareness of preceptorship standards
* Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate retention activities
* Understanding of maternity quality and safety, governance, and its application
