About us
We are recruiting a Senior Electro-Mechanical Engineer to work within a cross-functional project team environment to design and develop electromechanical systems for use in factory and process automation.
Loop Technology are an industrial automation specialist, with our HQ set in the heart of beautiful Dorset. We have many years of experience delivering state-of-the-art solutions to household names in advanced manufacturing. We have a world-leading reputation for solving difficult industrial problems, specialising in robotics and the aerospace sector.
The role
The role involves assisting in the creation and management of electro-mechanical system design, including control systems, from concept through to production, installation, and test, using a combination of manual and computer-aided engineering analysis, 3D CAD modelling and functional hardware proof of concept and prototyping.
You will work to develop and manage system and subsystem product requirements whilst conceiving and developing multiple design approaches to a sufficient level of maturity to allow each to be assessed against those requirements and ranked to allow an optimal design approach to be selected for product development, build and test.
The post also involves participating in and contributing to the creation and maintenance of design specifications and design rationale documents which support design decisions. You will also contribute to the preparation of design review materials following Loop Technology’s product development process.
Additionally, you will lead technical peer and cross-functional mechanical design reviews, to ensure that all proposed designs are evaluated against and meet the product design requirements of the projects to which they are assigned.
This role will visit client sites, across a number of different sectors, including defence. As a result, the successful candidate will need to be a British Citizen and be able to obtain security clearance up to Developed Vetting level.
Departmental
* Review mechanical design solutions developed by the Mechanical Engineering department to ensure that delivered systems meet customers’ needs and expectations.
* Provide technical guidance and direction to technical team members throughout all phases of the product development process to ensure that all functional and non-functional performance requirements are met and that design solutions are robust and cost-effective.
* Provide general support, mentorship, and design input and advice to all members of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
* Act as an ambassador for the Mechanical Engineering Department and promote and advocate for the department professionally when carrying out the responsibilities and duties of the position.
* Support the Mechanical Engineering Manager in carrying out their responsibilities and duties and, when requested, function as the manager of the department in their absence.
* In carrying out the duties required of the position, comply with both the spirit and stated intent of all company and departmental policies and procedures.
Functional
* During the system concept and detailed design phases of a project, work within a multidiscipline team (mechanical, electrical, software and systems engineering) to conceive and evaluate mechanical, electro-mechanical and control system design approaches that will meet the functional performance requirements of the deliverable system.
* Develop mechanical sub-system and component requirements that will be used to inform and drive the detailed electro-mechanical design and component selection.
* Selection, design and implementation of AC, DC brushed and brushless and stepper motors based on system functional performance requirements.
* Selection, design, and implementation of open and closed loop control based on performance and cost requirements.
* Design of position, velocity, cascade, and current closed loop servo control systems.
* Tuning and troubleshooting of PID, position, velocity, cascade servo control systems.
* Use of computer-based system modelling tools, (eg Simulink, MATlab) for system design and performance simulation.
* Use of empirical methods (eg sine sweep, Bode plots) and observation for analysing a system’s dynamic behaviour and comparison against simulated/expected behaviour.
* Work with the Mechanical Project Lead (MPL) and the mechanical design team to ensure that the mechanical elements of the deliverable design, when integrated with the electrical and software elements, will meet the overall system level performance requirements.
* Work within the project team to conceive, develop, and test product designs and ensure that design integrity and compliance with mechanical and subsystem design requirements are maintained.
* When directed by the Mechanical Engineering Manager, act as the Mechanical Project Lead (MPL) and provide the necessary oversight for the overall mechanical and electro-mechanical design to ensure design integrity and compliance with design requirements on projects to which assigned.
Skills
* Exceptional ability to discern, understand and breakdown requirement inputs from multiple sources, resolve those that are competing and/or contradictory, and formulate a single, complete set of clear, coherent, and unambiguous electro-mechanical subsystem requirements.
* Proven ability to conceive and develop innovative, practical, and robust electro-mechanical designs that are based on sound engineering principles.
* Exceptional ability to analyse a system’s mechanical behaviour, troubleshoot and diagnose performance problems and propose robust and practical solutions.
* Proven ability to manage own time and prioritise tasks based on high-level project milestones and objectives.
* Excellent interpersonal abilities and proven ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional project environment.
* Proficiency in the creation of 3D CAD models and assemblies.
* Proficiency in the creation of 2D orthographic engineering drawings IAW BS:8888.
* Exceptional written and oral communication skills (working language is English).
* Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
Qualifications
Electro-Mechanical, Mechatronic Engineering Degree or dual Electrical Mechanical Engineering Degree.
Years of Experience
In order to have the diversity of experience required for this role we would expect a minimum of eighteen (18) years of electro-mechanical and servo system design experience.
