Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner to join our highly skilled and dedicated Recovery Team, working in our state-of-the-art Theatres at Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Applicants must be registered with the NMC or HCPC and should be enthusiastic, self-motivated with a commitment to provide quality patient care within the post-operative phase of the patients journey. The post holder must be enthusiastic, flexible have good communication skills and be a team player. Suitable applicants will have demonstrable experience, mentorship is provided for staff new in post.
The post holder may be required to work across both Whiston and St Helens sites and must be flexible to work weekends evenings and on call.

Main duties of the job
* To work within a team, nurses/operating department practitioners to achieve the safe recovery of patients post anaesthesia/ surgical intervention.
* To work through the recovery competency framework and keep up to date with all essential/ mandatory training and complete rotations through all areas of recovery.
* To establish excellent working relationships with all service users and actively encourage and promote joint working in the pursuit of continuous service improvement.
* To be a role model and mentor to new learners, staff, student nurses and student operating department practitioners. Maintain 5-star patient care and adhere to trust 'ACE' behavioural standards.
* To work on behalf of the recovery team leads to co-ordinate the recovery area, to supervise delegation and review performance.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Act as a role model within the clinical working area and to present a professional image to which inspires confidence and trust in the delivery of care.
* Working within the NMC/HCPC Scope of Professional Practice be professionally accountable and responsible to the team leader for the formulation and implementation of individual patient care, taking a dynamic and research-based approach.
* At all times to act as the patients advocate by considering their individual physical and psychological needs. Whilst providing and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
* To keep professionally updated with current research relating to clinical practice and participate in supporting students and trainee ODPs.
* To act as a mentor/preceptor to trained learners and facilitate the acquisition of newly trained staffs competencies and skills.
* To personally take responsibility for own professional updating and maintain a personal record for future registration purposes.
* To attend regular mandatory update training, fire lectures, moving and handling and resuscitation training within the requirements of the Trusts health and safety policy.
* To promote an environment within ones own work area that is conducive to learning.
* To actively develop own learning and develop clinical skills required to provide a high standard of Recovery Care.
* To support learners in the area as own skills develop. Assist in the training programmes developed for individuals undergoing training in your work area.
LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
* To assist the Recovery Manager/Team Leader with the smooth running of the recovery departments. Acknowledging own limitations and seeking and acting on advice where required.
* To work within the larger multi-disciplinary team within theatres. Maintain efficient and effective communication throughout the team in order to ensure the highest standard of patient care.
* In the absence of the team leader, provide leadership, direction and support to work colleagues.
* To support and assist in the on-going performance of the IPR process in the recovery unit.
* To provide professional support to all colleagues. Supporting newly qualified staff following an appropriate orientation programme.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Registered or Student Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner with current professional registration.
Desirable
* Relevant diploma or degree, or working towards.
* Teaching and assessing/mentoring qualification.
* Related ENB/Theatre courses.
Knowledge & Experience Essential
* Knowledge of clinical skills required to undertake the role.
* Knowledge of current professional & clinical issues.
* Knowledge of Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults procedures.
