Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon (with interest in Lower Limb)
We are seeking to appoint a full time, substantive Consultant with an interest in Lower Limb surgery to work within the directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics.
We welcome applications from eligible candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who are about to complete their specialist training to those who have established careers.
Subspeciality interest in hip & knee arthroplasty is required. Experience in hip and knee revision arthroplasty would be advantageous.
Main duties of the job
We expect this person to help deliver and network the Orthopaedic service within Lancashire. This includes:
* Undertaking elective and fracture outpatient clinics
* Elective and trauma operating sessions
* Ward round duties and associated administration
On call duties are currently 1:8 with a 2 tier cover on all days. The successful applicant will complement the team of established consultants and wider MDT within the directorate.
The post is subject to the Trust's terms and conditions of service. The post will have sessions at both Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.
Job responsibilities
The department of Orthopaedics provides a general Orthopaedic and acute trauma service to the population of East Lancashire. The trauma service is consultant led with 2 all day trauma lists in the week and one all day at weekends. There are 2 consultants on call daily and the first on call admits the patients under their care. All the Consultants provide a general Orthopaedic service and in addition they have a sub-specialty interest. There are excellent links with teaching units within the North West region.
Operative facilities are provided in 8 laminar flow theatres across the Trust with 5 at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and 3 at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. A comprehensive range of trauma and elective instrumentation is held and regularly updated. Outpatient clinics are based at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. Peripheral Orthopaedic clinics are held in Rossendale, Pendle, Clitheroe and Accrington.
The unit is supported by a full range of radiology and pathology services. There are MR facilities on both sites.
The post holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them. They will devote time to this activity on a regular basis and may be named as a point of contact for educational supervision, appraisal and career advice. The post holder will also be responsible for supervising the education of medical students attached to the department.
The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with developments within the specialty by attending appropriate conferences and study courses. Study leave and expenses are processed by the Post Graduate team.

ATTAINMENTS
* Full registration with GMC & a licence to practise
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register or due admission within 6 months
* FRCS (Tr+Orth) or equivalent accreditation
* Evidence of recent publications/ research
* Fellowship Trained or evidence to show acceptance on a fellowship due to commence
TRAINING
* Recognised higher professional training
* Sub-specialty interest in lower limb arthroplasty
* Training in general trauma surgery (Adult & Paediatric)
* ATLS
EXPERIENCE
* Specialist Registrar or equivalent grade experience in Orthopaedic surgery leading to CCT or equivalent
* Demonstrated teaching to junior staff and non-medical staff
SKILLS
* Able to fully integrate within the Orthopaedic unit and develop own specialist interest that complements the existing skills/interests of the directorate
* Able to communicate with and motivate colleagues both medical and nonmedical
* Evidence of good teamwork
* Ability to lead a team
* Evidence of attendance on managerial course
* Involvement in management or administration
* Previous evidence of leadership roles
* Proven track record in education at undergraduate and postgraduate level
* Evidence of quality improvement projects

* Willing to reside within 10 miles/30 minutes drive of the trauma centre (Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital)
* Access to private transport
* Must be able to attend work in specified period when on-call
