Job Summary
Here is an excellent opportunity for you to join us as a Trust Junior Clinical Fellow (ST1/2). The aim of this post is to provide development opportunity for the post-holders to gain experience and further exposure to Stroke Medicine. The aim will be to build upon their existing basic and specialty training while supporting our key service areas in relation to the provision of in and out of hours clinical care by a trained doctor workforce. Post-holders can therefore expect specialty ward based and clinic/procedural experience and development to contribute to the stroke on-call rota.
You will offer candidates experience within Stroke medicine at different levels [Hospital, Accident and Emergency, Clinics, and an Intermediate care setting]. Candidates will also be able to contribute to the stroke on-call at a SHO level. There may also be an opportunity to gain additional specialty experience required by the candidate through placements in other medical specialties within Medicine.
Main duties of the job
* Work under a consultant ward-based team model
* Responsibility for continuity of care of Stroke patients on the ward
* Assisting with clerking and examining of all new admissions when on duty
* Take part in rostered on-call shifts (1:6 or 1:5)
* Liaise between nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives, and senior medical staff
* Attend and participate in ward rounds and complete tasks from the round
* Keep up-to date with all administrative duties including letters, results, discharge notes and discharge summaries as required
* Ordering tests and obtaining/interpreting results of these
* Maintaining drug charts and prescription of drugs
* Participate in teaching and audits

Job Description
Job responsibilities
* First class opportunity to undertake clinical assessment of a suspected stroke or TIA in an adult patient referred as an emergency to hospital or in an out-patient setting.
* Supervised learning to arrange and interpret appropriate investigations, self-sufficiency in imaging like brain scan and carotid Doppler to support or exclude diagnosis of a suspected stroke or TIA and its cause.
* Learning to manage hyper acute treatment for stroke including reperfusion treatments like thrombolysis and referring appropriate patients for Mechanical Thrombectomy to Thrombectomy centres.
* Ability to assess and manage TIA patients and recognize stroke mimics.
* Learning to manage immediate post-acute care of stroke including end-of-life care for stroke patients.
* Training to be able to manage secondary prevention strategies following stroke or TIA.
* Contribute to post-discharge medical care, rehabilitation, and longer term social and vocational integration.
* Recruit in multicentre trials of stroke as an independent recruiter and able to design and help existing research projects.
* Opportunities to contribute to the development of a stroke service and provide leadership to such a service.
* Undertake teaching and training of stroke related topics for medical undergraduates, post-graduates and other healthcare professionals.
